Hello!

What milks are suitable after breastfeeding. My son will be 12mths when I try to wean – he is 8 mths now. I’m not keen on cow’s (or animal) milk as I’ve researched what it contains. Was going to try Almond Milk as I drink this regularly, however research saying not suitable for complete whole milk for children under 5. It’s not a big deal, although not keen on animal milk, I will if I have no other options. I personally changed to nut milks due to me bloating from animal milk, I have cooked all my baby’s food from the time he started solids, over the years and after having 3 children (now teens) when I was in my early 20’s, I have discovered food is our medicine and have changed my lifestyle accordingly. Would just like to think I could have my son off to a good, healthy start – he eats everything I put in front of him and lately everything out of my mouth too hahaha! I can’t change the teenagers in their ways now, they have opinions of their own and I respect those. Thanks in advance for all your suggestions x

  • Some use Goats Milk Formula which very good if your baby is lactose intolerant. It is very hard to get in some States. I know one Mum uses Karicare Brand. They tried one called Lacteeze and she wouldn’t drink it. They tasted it so see why and it didn’t taste very nice in their personal opinion. A lot of babies don’t adapt to soy at all.

  • y little one has just gone 12 months but we are still feeding so this is not too much of an issue, I just figured a toddler milk would be suitable for when the time comes she has to wean. We drink lactose free milk but I just gave my son organic milk from a local dairy, it was expensive but worth it

  • Maybe soy milk? What did you end up using?

  • what did you decide on?

  • What milk have you ended up using?

  • I thought most formulas were derived from animal milk too so you would have to check those as well

  • rice milk, almond milk, coconut milk etc

  • What did you end up choosing?

  • Hope you received the advice you were looking for.

  • Cheese is actually a lot better way to get calcium intake than cows milk. I believe that years ago they used to add peroxide to milk to make it whiter, not sure if they do anything like that these days, but my father used to work at a milk factory years ago and knows what they did to milk.

  • What did you end up choosing?

  • After 12months they do not need formulas. Just cows milk (don’t over do it of course) and cheeses and yoghurts for calcium. If they have a bottle etc watered down or skim milk is a better option.

  • Formula or goats milk is good too

  • Thank You for all your comments, I appreciate them. As Kayla Murphy said… We are the only bunch who drink another animals milk, not to mention some people find breast milk offensive – who knows why! Yes my son is on solids and loves everything I put in front of him – never says no to food which is good as he was a mth prem, is on bottom percentile for weight and one below in height. His Dad and teenage sister were very skinny kids too so I’m ok with that. Just trying to consciously give him nutritious food. Thank you all again for your support x

  • It says not suitable as a complete food. I am assuming you will be feeding your baby solids as well? If so, it will not be the complete food. I used rice milk for my boys. soy is full of horrible phytoestrogens and really not good to fill our bodies full of hormones. Check the milk ingredients for added “fillers”, its amazing what goes in our foods. Breast feeding is by far the healthiest option. Usually only 2-3 feeds per day by 12 months and decreasing. My first boy self weaned at 16 months and went straight onto rice milk. Toddler milks are designed to increase profits for Nestlé and serve no benefit to your toddler.

  • I would look up formulas if you are not comfortable with cows milk or maybe discuss with your local health nurse or gp

  • Two of my three bubs haven’t touched cows milk…I opted for rice or oat. I find that Rice is closer to breast milk, taste and texture wise than the other alternatives so is easy to wean into. Agree with a previous post about it not being necessary to have ‘milk’, but my youngest still likes to have a bottle through the day ontop of her two bf morn and night (16mths)

  • If you choose to go non-animal milk you can get toddler formula that is based on soy products. This way you son will still be getting the calcium and other nutrients he needs to continue to thrive. I have a friend whose baby is lactose intolerant so has been on this formula since newborn days. Having said that, there are other formulas out there that claim to be gentle on kids’ tummies if you’d like to give that a go.

  • Cows have four stomachs we only have one. Keep using the formular until the age of two? We are the only bunch that drink another animals milk, quiet strange when you think about it.

  • Cows milk has lactose, goat’s milk is more suitable.
