Hello!

I have a 10yo boy, is and always has been picky with his food.
He does not eat any meat of any sort, the only ones he has learn to have small amounts of are chicken nugget, fast food chicken burger, fish fingers.
He doesn’t eat seafood, just the smell of shellfish will make him gag.
He’s not vegetarian, he doesn’t like all vegetables, he picks to eat broccoli, sometimes spinach, string beans, lettuce, cabbage, onion.
No soy products.
No sauces
Mainly relies on carbs (bread, noodles, rice) and eggs.
I’ve tried everything, he’s progressed (it was no fast food to start with). Anyone else have same problems as me?

  • I have a friend whose son went through a stage of only eating White food (chicken; cauliflower; milk; etc) when he was around 10yo. It may be a stage he’s going through or as someone mentioned it may certain textures he’s looking for. I would be hiding veggies in anything that he will eat. I know some Mums who load up their Spag Bol with lots of veg. Good luck.

  • I agree that this seems like more than just picky eating. Have you considered a medical assessment to see if there’s anything underlying it? I’ve heard stories of kids avoiding things without being able to articulate why, and it’s later turned out to be a medical issue. Or perhaps talk to a pyschologist about behavioural approaches.

  • My son can be very picky too. I feel like its a texture thing because he hates spinach but I can put half a bag in with fruit and make a juice and he’ll drink it no problems He doesn’t like pumpkin BUT he loves pumpkin soup etc.. The meat thing is hard though. I’d suggest getting some bloods taken and maybe using a multivitamin and/or iron supplement if necessary.

  • I have food related issues with my daughter and this has been a big worry for me. Only recently have I come to learn of a program funded by telethon that offers kids who are anxious about food the opportunity to talk to someone about it and get to the root cause of the concern. I have been battling this with my daughter for 5 plus years. I am not sure what state you are in but it could be worth looking into more to see if it is worth investing further for your child.

  • I agree that a Speech therapist, Occupational therapist or Dietician can be helpful with picky eaters and food related issues. Personally I would also look at your sons general health and happiness: is he happy and growing well ? does he get enough nutrition ? does he have enough energy to play and learn ? I would ask your GP to have his bloods checked regularly

  • Have you considered a speech therapist and dietitian? I had a dietitian refer me to a speechy when my toddler was absolutely refusing all food and they gave me some great tips on how to encourage food exploration. I know it’s a whole other ball game with a 10 year old, but it might help
