Hello!

Hi! I am currently living in Newcastle, NSW and my husband (who is a member of the defence force) was just told that it looks like we’ll be moving to Queensland (Amberley) mid year, but we won’t get a confirmation (posting order) until end of April/May. I am not sure how to plan everything now. My obstetrician is here in Newcastle and the plan was to go to NPH. How do I go with planning my baby’s birth in Queensland now? Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any help is appreciated.

  • Your hubby is part of the defence force, they look after their members, I’m sure it won’t be hard fir you to relocate and find a new alternative for your pregnancy

  • Aw, not an easy one as moving is already stressful on itself. I moved interstate in July with 4 kids. I wasn’t pregnant like you, but have 2 kids with special needs. One has T21 and sees 5 specialist and 2 therapists and the other one has mental health issues and sees 3 specialists/therapists. What helped me is to investigate before the move what the options are at the new locations and get as much referrals& transfers done before the move. Organisation was for me the key.

  • What a dilemma, moving whilst pregnant, I don’t envy you at all! But….I would probably have a chat to my current medical professionals, see what suggestions they have, many try get it organised before moving date. Then you’re ready to roll

  • Get them to start now transfer files etc. :)

  • yeah i hope that you dealt with it ok. i too had to move 4 weeks before bub was due. hubby took care of everything so all i had to do was endure the long car ride lol

  • Be extra careful, good luck!

  • I hope you were able to work out where your baby would be born and were able to get assistance from the ADF.

  • You can get all your records transferred to a Dr to where you are relocating to. You may even be able to get help through the defence, they do take good care of the defence families.

  • If the defence is moving you not much choice. I feel for you especially if this is your first. The advice depends on you situation. Get your medical notes transferred. Ask your doctor for a recommendation, maybe go up one weekend and check it all out prior to moving so you can get organised.

  • Hoping all went well, yet another reason why Australia needs more uniform policies

  • there are some good comments here

  • that would be so hard when you due to give birth…. how did it go

  • would like to know how you went with it all

  • Have just reread your letter. Amberley Airbase is just outside of Ipswich so you will probably going to Ipswich hospital. Our airforce relatives and other family members have all had their children at Ipswich, so you will be fine.

  • Wow, all the best, execellent advice from Fruitwood. You haven’t said where you are transferred to. My neice’s husband is stationed in Townsville and they had a great birth experience with their daughter. Townsville is so Army friendly. Here in Brisbane, the hospitals are all excellent, You will be fine. Ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist or hospital etc.

  • Doctors should be very understanding to this. I’m sure all records can be transferred easily and there will be a great obstetrician in QLD for you. Best of luck…. :)

  • Hi, my hubby is also in the defence force :D We moved from Richmond to Townsville when I was 30 weeks pregnant with our first child. My hospital in Richmond faxed all my medical records to Townsville and I made an appointment with the midwife clinic for as soon as we arrived. There were a few hiccups with missing paper work etc & with my daughter arriving early I had only had 1 appointment at the midwife clinic so when I actually gave birth, it was with a complete team of strangers. I didn’t know any of the midwives, nurses or doctors who helped with my daughters birth & they weren’t familiar with my birth plan. There is a clause in the defence manual that you can post out early or later than your actual posting date if your spouse is pregnant. If your going through the public system it’s relatively easy to transfer birthing units, but if your going private it’s a little bit harder with trying to find an obstetrician and which hospitals they deliver at. Good luck, having been in your exact situtation my biggest tip is to just go with flow and deal with each thing as it comes. It’s what we learn to do as defence wives :D

  • could you stay in Newcastle until after the birth?

  • just have a rough idea of the birth plan you want and it should all be pretty similar! I believe the defense force would have a fair amount of assistance available if you seek it out!

  • Get in touch with Ipswich Defence Housing where there is so much information for you regarding your move.
the local Hospitals are St Andrew’s Hospital (private), Ipswich General Hospital (public), Ipswich Day Hospital (private). http://www.dha.gov.au/housing/location-spotlights/ipswich.
