Hello!

She isn’t constipated as she does 1 or 2 poos a day. I breast feed her on demand. I have given her gas drops, which help with the wind but she still strains alot, and all night long! I am starting to feel depressed from exhaustion and unable to cope. Please help me with a magic solution!

  • I am wondering if there is something you are eating or drinking that’s going into your breastmilk. I know of one Mum whose baby screamed after her having roasted Eggplant. For hours the only time he went to sleep was when one of us carried him around. Or it could be something in the solids you are feeding him. Depending on what you are cooking maybe lift the lid a few times while it is cooking. Some foods contain their own gas – some such as cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli are particularly bad for that. Foods I avoided were onion family, spices. herbs etc. Your baby’s system may not be ready for them. Some also have trouble digesting cheese at a young age. If you are using ordinary milk in your cooking or cereal you give him it may be that he is lactose intolerant. If nobody’s suggestions work quickly I suggest you consult your GP, the telehealth line, or your pharmacist. They learn medical info at Uni, but not as long as GPs.

  • If you are worried speak with your child health nurse or GP.
Try bicycle legs, lay face down over your legs and gently rock bub left to right.
Try burping longer or again after 15-30 minutes.
Trust your gut and see someone if its getting out of hand though!

  • I would check with your MCHN and see what they say. Some tips I can give you is bicycle movements with her legs and gentle massaging the stomach in a clockwise motion (direction intestines flow). You can also give her Infants Friend, which you can get in the baby aisle of supermarket or a pharmacy. It helps with a number of things.

  • Get her checked out with the GP. Maybe try something like Parachoc?

  • A pharmacist in your local area might also be able to give advice. I often contact our local pharmacist for advice and they are brilliant.

  • If she’s pooing regularly and ok health wise, eating/drinking well, I would say don’t stress too much. It could just be a noise she’s making. But if it continues, maybe a GP appointment could be needed

  • First of all I wouldn’t worry too much as what you say she isn’t constipated. I would give a gentle tummy massage clockwise around the belly button. When you still feel concerned talk about it with your GP or with the nurse by the check ups.

  • It might be an idea for a GP visit?

  • I would see your GP or MCHN but it sounds normal for her age. Babies are very noisy when they are so young but can’t hurt to get it checked out.

  • I really think you need to see a doctor about this.
