Forum New Years Eve family activities

Just been looking at old questions and answers on MoM – with particular interest on at home family friendly New Years Eve ideas. We have been asked by ours about the New Year and what happens – we have explained the its just an arbitrary time and nothing “special” happens, but we are happy to stay up of they want to. Do other families stay at home, and if so, what do you do? Do you have any NYE family traditions?

We were thinking of an extended games night (Monopoly, Mahjong and other longer lasting games) with friends with similar aged children. Kids in PJ’s allowing heading to bed at a latish time as required (not necessarily midnight). We have never been NYE party people.

  • extended games night sounds fun. definitely need some glow sticks and an easy bbq tea or hot roast rolls with gravy. maybe some fun dancing or dancing games like statues for the kids.

  • We don’t have family in Australia and always go to New Year events with parks and rides, live music, dance and fireworks

  • yeah we check out fireworks and then then kids can go to bed when they are ready, if not already asleep in the car.

  • Dinner for One – hadn’t heard of it before and googled it. We will add that to our list this year thanks mom 160421!

  • It is nice just to put your feet up and relax. No partying for us on New Years Eve.

  • New Years Eve is a lovely night and we celebrate with food, family and friends. We love the promise of a New Year.

  • We always watch Dinner for One – shown on SBS at around 7.30pm? every new year’s eve, then play cards or board games till 9pm fireworks on tv. On occasion we have stayed up till midnight and watched the Sydney fireworks on tv.

  • If there’s fireworks on, we might head out for a look, then head home again. We don’t do the partying til after midnight, it’s never interested me. We don’t really plan things at home either as everyone usually has plans. But if someone turns up, we’re happy to celebrate with them

  • I think your idea is great. Games in the evening. If you reach midnight ok, otherwise is not a big deal. We generally go out to see the fireworks at 9 pm, then we come home and we play board games together.
