Hello!

My 7 month old is constantly rolling in her cot when she gets up or when we try to put her to sleep. She will roll and hit her head on the cot. Most of the time, she will just continue on. I am very concerned. What can I do to protect her head?

  • Another mother had her child rocking backwards & forwards & sometimes hitting head on end of cot bars, sometimes the cot legs moved a bit off the floor!. She asked her Dr. about this, & he said he used to do the same thing when he was a baby !!!!! As this was some years back, the child has now grown up & working & all is good. Check it out with someone in the medical field if you are still concerned.

  • I was going to suggest cot bumpers, but I think MoM143044’s suggestion is better.

  • My concern with cot bumpers would be the SIDS risk.
What worked for my daughter, and am now using for my son is a Safe T Sleep. Honestly, the greatest invention ever. They aren’t cheap though! Think we paid about $100 for it. Its a material that goes around the mattress and has a section that you lay baby in and then it has Velcro that does up around their waist. It will keep her on her back. My daughter used to try and stand in her cot and therefore wouldn’t lay down to sleep.
They are suitable until age 4 or 5 I think. We used it as well when we transitioned my daughter from cot to toddler bed at age 2 as we were concerned she would fall out of bed.

  • You can put a bumper around the inside of the cot, but be careful to get a breathable one, so she can breathe if she sleeps up against it

  • Have a talk to your maternal health child nurse she should have pod suggestions :)

  • Bubs will learn. Cot bumpers can be dangerous (SIDS etc). You could use a sleeping bag or tuck them under a single sheet right down the bottom of the cot to restrict movement. I think they all go through a stage like this as they grow and develop new skills like rolling and crawling.

  • like someone else suggested a sleeping bag may limit the movment. I had someone give me a safety sleep I think it was called where it was velcro and attached to the mattress and another two pieces of material where you can put around the baby so they cant roll. I only had to use this for a short time before the rolling stopped.

  • There are cot liners that are good

  • Try a sleeping bag to limit her rolling. Put in bumpers if you are getting worried but if she is not crying from the bump I don’t think it’s hurting her too much!

  • I’d do nothing in your situation. It probably looks worse than it is (especially if she continues on) and babies are extremely intelligent – she’ll learn quickly what hurts and what doesn’t

  • there are a lot of bumpers out there that will help

  • Get Some Cot Bumpers, Then When She Hits Her Head Its Not So Hard

  • i hope you found a good solution

  • Buy Cot Bumpers they are available in Kmart, Target, Big W and any Baby store. I made mine with lovely double thickness quilting material and tied it on to every 4th rung using ribbon. Works a treat.

  • just make sure there isnt a pillow in her cot

  • Sorry I said he I mean her

  • I’m sure if it was hurting him he wouldn’t keep doing it give it time and he will stop I think putting anything in the cot around the sides particularly at night time when you are not able to keep an eye on him is too risky

  • You hear not to use bumpers…for sleeping/safety reasons but they really are the only way to avoid head bumps.

  • We have had to put a bumper up of the same reason!

  • Check out the aby shops and get some ideas. Maybe you can improvise with something you already have.
