Hello!

My son currently doesn’t do any after school activities. He’s not really a sporty kid but would be happy to do sport however I think it would be better for him to do scouts as he likes to be hands on and work out problems etc. Could people please share their experiences with sport and scouts. Thanks

  • My son did neither. He was into music so everything revolved around that.

  • Scouts involve quite a lot of physical activities too, so it might provide your son with a range of experiences.

  • See if you can do a trial of scouts (I know girl guides do ) and see which he prefers.

  • Both have their pro’s and cons. Maybe ask your child which he would prefer?

  • I think scouts are an incredible organisation. Great confidence builder, improves their social skills and adds an interminable amount of other skills

  • Just wondering what you and your son decided on – scouts or sport?

  • I would let your son make the decision as to what he’d like to try.

  • Probably best to take him to a scouts club and talk to the leader and see if he seems interested . My son only did it for a year as he lost interest so it is hard to say . He should also try different sports at school and normally if he loves it , he will want to do more . My son plays cricket so that’s how he knew about it .

  • Scouts would be an awesome choice for him. It teaches practical, hands on stuff as well as the social aspect and building independence with their camps. I think you’ll find they even play some fun sports

  • Maybe try out both and see what fits?

  • I think scouts would be a little more rounded, they do quite a lot of sports too but are more about the teamwork rather than the end score!

  • Actually. a compromise of both would probably give the child a bit of lifeskills, and it is amazing how well they should progress in their future life, IF they follow the rules and regulations of either, but preferably, Both

  • How old is your son? My son isn’t sporty – we tried lots of different ones and then he started in Joey’s (the youngest age group for scouts). He really enjoyed it. They get to do sleepovers, camps, excursions etc. Scouts works out much cheaper for us than sports. He is now going up to cubs where they do much more badge work (there are only 4 group badges in joeys and 1 individual badge). Scouts all have 3 sessions for free to try them out. I suggest you try him out in scouts and see what he thinks.

  • Sports.

  • Scouts are great for lots of kids boys and girls as they get to do a lot of hands on things and will also learn things to support them later in life I still remember how to tie some knots thanks to scouts and remember a lot of my other activities like damper making and fire skills. Also general belonging to a group without any competition of sport.

  • I just enrolled my 9 year old daughter who isn’t very sporty into Girl Guides and she is loving it.

  • Scouts are good a friend of mines son does it and loves it.

  • My son isn’t at this age yet, but have you asked him what/if he would like to do any of these activities?
My brother loved scouts and learned heaps from being part of the troop – but he really wanted to join.

  • Either is a good option. It is good for kids to be active and social. see what they prefer or where their friends go.

  • My boys are also not sporty at all and joined scouts a few years ago – It was the best thing for them. They go away on camps and have made some great friends – once a year they go on an adventure somewhere around Australia for a week with scouts/ventures from all over. They are getting out and doing something – its great!!
