Septic Safe Cleaning - Mouths of Mums

Hello!

Curious if any other Mums here also have septic tanks and have cracked the code on septic safe cleaning. Are there any brands you find amazing, or a make yourself potion that stacks up to hard chemicals. I’m missing being able to throw bleach at my problems (shower!)
I’ve made a routine of squeegeeing down the shower every night, which is really helping, but this is an old bathroom with aging grout and ceramic sinks that need some heavy TLC.
Thank you!!

  • I don’t have a secptic tank, but since having a bub I have made the switch to Koh, and it has changed my life!!! I was sick of the smell of bleach and didn’t want my bubba getting into it or inhaling those harsh chemicals, and Koh has not disappointed. I use their bathroom cleaner all over my shower and it makes it look almost brand new! Soap scum – GONE! They also have spetic safe toilet cleaner, which I have found works amazing and doesn’t smell like harsh chemicals – you just drop it in and leave it, then scrub the bowl and flush it down!
    Hope that helps!

  • No we don’t have a septic tank. Just wondering if you live in a rural area where main sewer access is unavailable ? It is my understanding that it it best to avoid harsh chemical for cleaning and best to opt for natural, biodegradable, and plant-based cleaners. Same as we use in our household such as white vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, soap nuts and castile soap.

  • My daughter lived on a property that had septic and all she ever used to clean was vinegar and bi carb for cleaning and peroxide and bicarb for the bathroom, shower etc. If you use this method it stops the mould spores returning whereas bleach only gets rid of it for a time and it returns. If you use these methods you can also add some essential oils into your cleaning as well. But don’t use bleach if you have septic either. I hope this helps.

  • Hi lovely! Anita the MoM Editor here! Not sure if you’ve seen but we currently have a bunch of members on Making HOME trying out Jif Professional (https://makinghome.com.au/review/jif-professional/) which you can grab at Bunnings, and they generally believe that Jif Professional stacks up very well against “heavier” chemical products, but with the benefits of being gentle – so we thought we’d share your question with the Jif team – great news is you can use Jif at your home too. Here’s their response, hope it’s helpful!
“Jif Cream is safe for everyday household cleaning and its wash water can go into septic tanks when used as directed. However, it is not a septic tank cleaner, as it does not contain the specialised enzymes or bacteria required to break down septic tank sludge.”

  • **non ceramic sinks**
Ceramic would be heaven in this situation. These are a type of plastic that have also seen better days. Eventually we would love to reno the whole thing, but all 3 bathrooms have the same issues which will of course mean they are tackled one at a time
