Hello!

I’m afraid if I don’t get out what I want to say I’ll forget it. I don’t mean to be rude but it is a bit of a problem I have. How do I stop interrupting? Suggestions would be great

  • If you forget something, then you forget. If conversation is flowing it may come to you when it’s your turn. If you’re constantly interrupting others to say what you want, whenever you want you may be making your brain lazy as it doesn’t need to recall information.

  • Maybe write down what you want to say while others are speaking.

  • Same! But I figure “if they matter, they won’t mind, and if they mind then they don’t matter”

  • I’m not great at this either. You can try asking people you trust (eg your husband, close family) to remind you when you do it; getting more conscious of it might help you interrupt less often.

  • Just make a mental note of what you want to say then wait for a break in the conversation to say it.

  • Don’t interrupt just wait for your turn to have a say,at least you know not to do it!

  • count to five under your breath before you comment – I can be guilty of this. you need to focus on being an active listener … google it it will teach you heaps

  • It sounds like anxiety and my mother says excactly the same thing . Best to talk to a doctor if you have deep concerns and then he can recommend a psychologist if this is distressing for you . Also perhaps carry a notebook around if you think you are experiencing memory loss as it can happen as we get older.

  • I do the same :( I have a terrible memory problems but if i’m nervous its waaaay way worse. No advice sorry but you’re not alone x

  • The fact that you are already self improving is the greatest step :)

  • I think that you should just try to relax and concentrate on the conversation as it is. This way you will still be taking part and even if you don’t remember until next time, you would still be involved rather than just continually thinking about what you want to say instead of really listening. I know that it is difficult but most of us have had this problem at some time. Just being aware that you are doing this should help. Good luck.

  • I love this question, lots of great answers and thankyou for asking it, it is a problem that I have and try to avoid without success, I am going to try not to interrupt anymore from tomorrow. lol

  • It can definitely be difficult; tips; listen, pause, talk and always take turns in conversation(a bit like tennis!). Having a drink/cuppa in your hand can be helpful; take sips as it will make you pause and help you to remember what you want to say. Good Luck! :)

  • just wait for the natural pause in conversation
if you remember some point that you wanted to express, and now you feel awkward to say it because the convo is on another topic, bring that point up as a joke or just say “i was going to say earlier….”

talk to people who you feel comfortable with

  • I have the same problem, I just try & tell myself not to & listen to the person talking. You just have to try & remember what you’re going to say. It can be hard but the more patient you are the easier it will become

  • Deep breaths and concentration and less stress….good luck

  • Omg I’m the same! As soon as a do it I feel so bad, but I can’t help it!

  • slow down and listen, that way you wont interrupt lol

  • If you think it is a real problem of forgetting what you are about to say, have a notepad handy and scribble down the main point. When others have finished speaking, you can quickly glance at your paper and have your turn to speak.

  • Maybe just go over in your mind what you want to say and pick the right time when to say it and try to just listen to what people say before you say your bit.
