Hello!

Is it just me or are supermarkets getting dodgier and dodgier with their markdowns? I get that they need to make money, but lets face it, they are rolling in that enough as it is!
Now, they are waiting later and later to mark down their meat and fresh produce to the point where it is simply being thrown out. In the midst of this cost of living crisis, where some people are struggling to buy food I find this disgusting!
To be more specific, the day before meat is due to expire, they mark it down to as little as 20c off. Who would even bother with such a small discount when the food is so close to expiry? Why, when they can pay 20c more and maybe get something that has a week on it? The day of expiry, they are now waiting until around 6pm to mark down meat. This is if they get around to it, as I have seen instances where food hasn’t been marked all the way down, has expired and is still on shelf the next day. There really needs to be some kind of reform into this kind of behaviour from supermarkets.

  • I know, it’s absolutely ridiculous. I saw a mark down for a bakery item with cream that was expiring the same day, for 11c. Honestly, I don’t bother with markdowns any more, it’s not really a saving and for the 20c or so you save, you may as well buy something with a long use by date so you don’t need to rush to use it and know it’s fresh. Imagine all the food they are throwing in the bin!

  • The cost of living is really getting out of hand. We only buy the half price items

  • I have really noticed this at Coles lately, tiny markdowns when the item is going out of date the next day. My local IGA is pretty good with their markdowns still.

  • It is so bad lately not only are there limited markdowns and true sales but the prices have jumped to an unrealistic level.

  • I am never able to get markdowns anymore. I used to always get my bread reduced but never see bread reduced anymore. Maybe they have changed when they mark it down

  • Totally agree, I’m sick of supermarkets price gauging

  • Yes so dodgy Coles especially with there weekly catalogue specials I remember one week I bough some Arnott’s cream biscuits for $2 the next weeks catalogue the same cream biscuits were 2 packets for $7 so how is a special

  • So dodgy! Our Woolies even put a big yellow sticker on a pack of noodles “$4” I lifted up the tag and underneath was $3.99. So misleading!

  • I use to do majority of my food shop at Aldi then go to woolies for what they didn’t have. Im finding that’s a waste of time now days. ALDI prices are going up and they’re getting less and less selection. It’s getting ridiculous

  • I find Coles to be super dodgy. Their bagged for and veg always seem to come with a couple or so which are rotten so I don’t buy thse sorts of products from them anymore!

  • I have huge problems with Coles at the moment, so I am not surprised they do this sort of thing too.

  • If I can avoid shopping at Woolworths and Coles I try to at all costs. The price gouging in insane. I try to shop around Aldi, local supermarkets, for lunch snacks even your cheapie stores like Silly Sollys are excellent to try. If you are in a larger metropolitan area trying food outlets are also excellent to snag a good deal on food, snacks, fruit/veg and meat.

  • I refuse to shop at Woolworths and only buy a couple of items I can’t buy elsewhere at Coles but I never spend more than $10-$20 there. I shop at my locally owned IGA and Aldi which they did a recent survey and found it 25% cheaper than the big 2. Woolworths and Coles have been gouging us for years and their specials aren’t special at all. If you lift up the special ticket you’ll see it’s either the same price as before or dearer. I had words with the manager at my local Coles fruit section about rotten fruit which I was pulling out and putting to the side so no one would buy it and she came out and abused me and told me I couldn’t do it and put the rotten fruit back. Woolworths is just as bad if not worse. So do your pockets are favour and shop elsewhere. Eventually if people wake up to them ripping us off and making huge profits off the back of everyday Aussie’s the better and maybe then they’ll take note we’re not pushovers.

  • There have always been “sales” and “markdowns” that are a con.

  • The cost of meat has not gone up that much in the last ten years.

Because the cost of fuel has not increased much in the last ten years.

But really, that meat, costs more than your dog.

  • So dodgy! They are becoming more and more expensive with less mark downs or the mark downs are dodgy with little savings for consumers.

  • So dodgey, everything about supermarkets just screams RIP OFF! And yet they get away with it, make more money, rip off more people. Why? Cos the govt needs them. How many people got charged for price gouging during covid? Yet here’s Coles and Woolies gouging on a daily basis

  • I rarely actually go into the supermarket so don’t generally see the mark downs. I do online shopping and try to create my weekly meal plan from the specials instead.

  • Yeah, Woolworths staff have literally told me that they don’t mark down fresh food (like spinach leaves) until the day of the use by date. And even then it’s a small mark down. I mean, it’ll go off before you can use it. Not worth it. Even a day or two earlier would be a plus.

  • I don’t bother with mark-downs any more as I don’t have time to wait around to find out when they will be marked down. Seems a different day every week.
