My eldest just had her first driving test yesterday and failed. My son is 16 and has riving lessons too. I suppose that once they have their license, they suppose to be qualified to drive

I’m currently teaching two to drive and I agree with getting some lessons for them to ensure they are learning the correct way. I went along with my son to a RAC “Keys 2 drive” session which was informative for us both.

I’ll be facing this in a couple of years – not looking forward to it.

We got our kids to have a couple of professional driving lessons to start with. That got them used to handling a car and made things a little easier

Taught one, and in the middle of teaching two others. It’s so hard. It’s also expensive to pay for lessons. Just keep hanging in there and persevering. Started out in local church carpark (massive), progressed to back streets before letting any of them loose on main roads. Choose the time you go driving eg. peak hour on busy roads is just too stressful. Pick you time when you’re not tired and they’re not tired either…really helps with reducing the stress level.

I would suggest going with a driving instructor/driving school.

Get someone else to teach them!

I’ll let you know when our DD gets her license, she’s dragging the chain a bit, obviously isn’t confident enough yet.

I taught 3 and the biggest thing for me was having plenty of room around the car to start. I went to a large car park on the weekend when it was mostly empty and got them to park and take off change into 2nd then drive around and park and do it again as taking off is definitely the important confidence builder. Remembering indicating each time so it becomes a good habit.After this is achieved on to the quiet roads in daylight and keep to 60 roads for a while. Then go to traffic lights and traffic. Then on wet days and then at night. I think it is a great idea for them to have a couple of driving classes from the professionals if you can towards the end in case they have picked up any bad habits. Good luck. I truly believe from experience that the best thing to do is get them to have at least 4 or 5 lessons with the driving school first. That way they don’t pick up bad habits from us and they already have a few basic skills. Other friends did this and we all believe it helped.

Having them have a few lessons with a qualified driving instructor first is usually a good idea. If you have a quite isolated area or unsed car park for them to practice that’s usually a great start.

Start with a professional driving instructor for about 5 lessons. Then ask the instructor how they are going. Much easier, they have brakes on their side you don’t!!!

Tried it once never again, not until he done at least 100 hours with an instructor lol

We started our sons lessons on our property and then in a couple of carparks and then tuesday mornings on the road (as it seems to be very quiet at that time), we took him into some quiet suburbs going in and out of side streets, this really helped him. Now he drives to his friends house and when I go shopping. He will be having some driving lessons in the next couple of weeks and they hopefully get his licence. I will admit, I was quite nervous going with him for his first few tries, but he really surprised me at how good he was.

I agree, get them a driving instructor.
