Hello!

We’re planning a family holiday to the Victorian snow fields later this year. Any tips for taking a 14 month old and what might need etc? Thanks!

  • Lots of layers and more clothes than you think you could possibly need! Socks are great for their hands if you don’t have gloves or when they get wet through. Waterproof “puddle pants” are good over their clothes (and often less bulky than actual snow pants.)

  • Lots of warm clothes and lots of things to entertain them in the day time and favourite games, toys and DVD as the days can be very long for who ever is looking after them as you can be confined to the room. have fun!

  • Like some suggestions above, the eye protection is very important. The glare from the snow as well as the sun can do significant eye damage. Many give no thought to that at all. Even a little peaked hat on told of a woolly one is a good idea even though you might have issues making your little one keep a hat on. We have issues with one of ours. He hates anybody even touching his head and hates hats. here it is even a case of “no hats, no playground or ducks” He has no objection to sunscreen. re. sunscreen I suggest you buy the one specifically for babies or toddlers. It has no scent or chemicals that keep the scent in. I also suggest you skin test one before you are going to have it on your baby for any length of time. One type(a very well known brand) a relative of mine used on her child brought out a nasty red itchy rash which didn’t appear for a few hours- the entire area which had sunscreen applied. The skin literally turned brick red so she was taken to the Dr. to check that was only a reaction and nothing more serious. You can test it by putting a smear on the inside of your baby’s arm down close to the wrist. For legal reasons I can’t state the brand that was the issue. Other people have had issues with other brands though. I strongly suggest you speak to a pharmacist and be guided by their recommendation. Some brands are a lot safer and more effective than others.

  • Pack extra gloves and socks as no doubt they will be soaking half way through the day. Also, it’s a big day for the little ones so pack something to entertain themselves (books, card games etc) as they will be sick of skiing and want to sit in the warmth for a little bit. Snacks and hot chocolate is always good too.

  • keep clothes layered, sunscreen for any skin showing, waterproof outer layer and gloves.

  • If you have an Aldi store nearby, they often sell snow gear for the whole family at good prices a bit closer to winter. Don’t get onesie style snow suits as they’ll be a pain when it’s time to change nappies, so stick with a 2 piece outfit. Eye protection is important, in the form of sunglasses or goggles. Don’t forget sunscreen too.
