Hello!

Hi, I’m asking this on behalf of my friend. She had a 36 hour labour that ended in an emergency c-section. Her body isn’t healing properly, and therefore her milk hasn’t come in. To top it all off, her baby boy is now in NICU due to serious jaundice. So I was hoping you could all pray for her, and her LO. and give me any tips for helping your milk to come in?  Tia, any help would be much appreciated.

  • How did it all turn out?

  • Good suggestions below – hope they helped.

  • Hot showers and massaging breasts while in the shower

  • I hope that your friend eventually got her milk

  • I hope things are going well for your friend and her bub, and hope that her milk came in.

  • I had to hv medication to make milk come in as I hemeraged

  • I had my c-section on a Monday and my milk came in by Thursday. Since I never went into labor (breech baby), they give you pitocin after having the baby to tell your body that the baby is out. My baby had no problems nursing and we never had to supplement her feedings.

Unfortunately my milk never fully came in. My son was born at 12AM Fri (3 wks early due to a small placental abruption) We had to take him to the hospital Tue AM because he was so dehydrated. He dropped to 5.2 from 6.8. It was traumatic for me. I felt horrible. I pumped, but could never get more than 2oz per DAY and that was after trying EVERYTHING, even Domperadone!! It was such a loss for me to not be able to breastfeed (I stopped at 6 wks after pumping every 3 hrs) I was exhausted and mentally distressed over it all) I did my best. I am grateful that formula is available at least! My sweet little boy is now 11 months and no one would know that he wasn’t able to get much breastmilk :)

My milk came in less than 48 hours after c-section delivery (no labor), but it was also my second child. The nurses in the hospital didn’t believe that my milk had come in that fast. I was getting engorged fast. I finally got a hold of breast pump and showed them that I was actually making milk and suddenly they changed their tune. I have an overabundant supply with little effort. Apparently, I am a freak of nature, but many babies benefit from my supply.

I had an emergency C-Section on 12/14/12. I pumped that day, but only some dark stuff came out. The next day, I pumped maybe 20ml. The two days after that, about 50ml each day. Then, over the next two days, 300ml +. The nurses were extremely surprised that I started so early and was able to get so much. After an emergency c-section at 25 weeks, I’m glad something went right!

I was wondering this same thing!! My first baby i did go into labor but due to crowning we had a c section. then we had complications (abo incompatibility) so she had to be shipped to another hospital with in the first 24 hours. I was only able to feed her once in 72 hours. I pumped when i wasnt able to be with her every 2 hours. my milk never came in. I felt like it was my fault and that i was letting my baby down. Now i am 20 weeks and i am having a planned c-section. I am worried that it will happen again.

My milk came in on the third day, which the nurse told me was right on schedule. I had a planned c-section (breech baby), but I don’t recall that I was given pitocin.

  • Tell her to try massage her boob and just get bub to suck, bubby should bring her milk down :-)

  • Ginger helped me so much. i was practically overflowing. ginger tea, ginger bath, ginger meals…

  • It’s all got to do with the nurturing hormones – stressing about it is unfortunately working against her!

  • Massage in a warm bath is one of the things I was told

  • Easier said than done I know, but try to get her to say as calm as possible. Lots of skin to skin with bubby, and putting him to the breast as often as possible. As others have mentioned, there is medication that can help also, so that’s something for her to discuss with her health care provider.

  • God bless your friend Tia and i hope her little boy is OK, my prayers go out to her. Try taking warm showers and stimulating her nipples and drink plenty of fluids. I would also start expressing to stimulate flow

  • If her baby is in hospital the nurses there would be the best to ask for advice and the hospital could have a lactation consultant (a nurse who only deals with breast feeding) to help her. Some say massage is good to help but the hospital may put her on an electric pump to help. I wish her best of luck.

  • Prayers for your friend. When my bub was in special care with jaundice I pumped like there was no tomorrow! There is also an old school method they can use where they put a central line on your breast (with formula in it) and tape it to your nipple so that the baby can’t drink and stimulate at the same time. I did this and it was a bit messy but worked a treat

  • I had to have a c section and got a bad infection and ended up having to have 2 courses of antibiotics, no one believes me when I tell them but my milk took 5 weeks to come in, I just persisted with expressing and letting bub suck before every bottle. Let me tell you there were many tears when all I’d express was 2-4 mls per breast but at about 5 weeks I expressed and got 40 mls out of one breast and 50 mls out of the other. Bub’s now nearly 5 mths and I still do a couple of bottles throughout the day but I have milk of my own to give him too. Tell your friend to be patient, when her body starts healing properly her milk will come in.
