Hello!

My 18M has dairy, egg, lentil, beef allergies and has always had slow weight gain. His allergies also has made him a fussy and picky eater. Do any mummies have any suggestions on how to increase toddler weight gain?

  • You’d be surprised by the amount of food growing toddlers will eat. Keep feeding constantly lay off heavy liquid that fills bellies focusing on food.

  • Really hope you’ve been able to find the right solution for your little guy. After a paediatrician, dietitian and speech therapist we’ve found the winning methods to teach my almost 11 month old to eat and chew properly, be interested in food, and gain weight. I know first hand how stressful it is and I’m sending positivity your way.

  • Do you have access to a dietician? The allergies and need to gain weight make things tricky

  • That sounds really hard! I think you would need to get specialist advice on this to ensure that the formula you provide is suitable for your child’s allergies.
Other than that, maybe try a high carb diet like potatoes, sweet potato, etc. If you child can eat chicken, maybe try that. Mince also tends to have a bit more fat in it also. Not sure if there is any allergy to bread, but wholemeal would be best if he can eat it. Basmati rice too.

  • I’d suggest talking to a nutritionist to get personalised advice.

  • With those allergies I’d say pasta, protein and good fats maybe a dairyfree toddler formula of some sort… Have a talk to your doc/paediatrician and see if they have any suggestions.

  • Maybe offering lots of snacks, so that he’s eating a bit more through the day.

  • I’d find a suitable baby formula, super healthy and easy way to increase calories

  • When you have concerns I would talk to your GP, Peadiatrician or Dietician

  • If he drinks milk, try adding powdered milk to the milk – really increases the calories.

  • Another thing I have found that’s helping, which isn’t a permanent tool as I want my bub to learn how to eat properly, is using a Subo bottle. Blitzing up coconut yoghurt with weetbix and fruit, and soups and risotto full of good carbs and fats. For older bubs you can give smoothies. It could be a great on the go option.

  • As most have said here, a dietician will be able to help. If he is up to eating bread yet maybe try various spreads like peanut butter, buttery, vegemite etc.

  • We always seek advice from the GP and dietician; it has been helpful in managing diet and special dietary needs.

  • I would be getting a referral from your GP or baby clinic to see a nutritionist or dietician as it is very hard trying to do these things on your own when allergies are involved. Hard enough when there are no allergies.

  • I would suggest seeing a paediatric nutritionist, but what could also be helpful, which I did with my daughter when she was little, was always leave a plate of snacks out that she could graze on during the day.

  • I’m currently trying to get my 9 month old to gain more weight and have been given a few tips from a dietitian; when he has baby crackers to put coconut yoghurt or avocado on top as they are healthy fats. Baby cereal and weetbix are high in iron. Also adding some formula into his food.
I would highly recommend seeing a dietitian. I found it so helpful, and they will be able to give you great recommendations around his allergies.

  • I have a child who is a very fussy eater and has an allergy to egg. I found adding a formula rich in nutrients helpful for my daughter. Have you had a look to see if there is one that will cover all your childs food allergies? Might be worth seeing a dietitian or a health professional that focuses in this area to see what options they might recommend.
