Hello!

Hi!
First time poster, so hopefully this goes well.

Basically, I took a Leave of Absence from my university degree in order to have my last baby. I’m due to return to study on Tuesday, but I’m so nervous I feel physically ill.

Baby is 1 year old now, but still breastfed more than 20 times per day and night, and doesn’t use a pacifier or bottle.
Hates cows milk, and otherwise only drinks water. Won’t even accept my milk in a bottle.

I am so nervous about being away for so many hours, 6 per day, 2 days per week. I feel as though I’m making a huge mistake, and I don’t know what to do!

Is it just nerves, or is my psyche trying to tell me something? To wait, maybe?

What do you think I should do?

Any advice would be appreciated, but no nasty comments please.

Thanks very much. :)

  • Great to read that it all worked out and that you had such wonderful support from your hubby !

  • Study is always worthwhile! It’s hard to get back to it but always better to have a degree up your belt even if you don’t end up working in that field.

  • I hope you gave it a go. Finishing your degree is so important to your future.

  • I’m so glad to read your update and hear that everything is going well. Good on you.

  • I’m thinking a nerve thing. Only way to find out us to give it a go. If it doesn’t work, try another delay. I’m not sure about still breast feeding a 1 yo up to 20 times a day still. Seems a bit excessive

  • I wonder how you went. In your situation, I would go back and spend few days to get him used to drinking breast milk through bottle. Trust me when his hungry he will drink it. Good luck!!

  • Thank you for your great responses. :) The balancing act seems to be going well, thank you. :D I have submitted all of my assessments ridiculously early, and started on the next lot. lol. I’d forgotten how much work uni is! I’m really loving it, though. It’s wonderful to be back. :D Thanks so much for asking! Have a great night! :)

  • So how is the balancing act going?

  • Good luck with your studies. It can be a very difficult balancing act so my advice would be to plan plan plan!

  • I don’t have any advice other than follow your heart and do what’s right for you. Good luck!

  • I had a similar baby only wanted booby milk and then got really fussy and would not take it in a bottle and on top of that woke every night every hour from birth to now. I guess only you can know when you are ready to go back to uni, follow your heart. If theres some doubt there then just give it some more time.

  • I’m glad your feeling confident to go back!! I hope it all works out for you and your family. Best of luck!

  • Good luck and may you enjoy the best of both worlds. Hope you find the support you need with juggling with family and studies

  • Glad the answers were helpful and that you are giving it a go! Good Luck and hope it all goes well. Sounds like you have planned well for your return to study.

  • Good on you for going back,l hope it’s a wonderful experience.Best of Luck!

  • Thank you so much for the considerate answers to this. I really appreciate it. :)

It is full time study, 14 hours on campus, 26 hours off campus study per week, which is the best deal I could broker with the university at this stage.

I have decided I will go back. Hubby studies his degree online, so we’ve decided he and Bub can meet me at uni during my lunch breaks so I can feed Bub, and break up the long hours away.

Hopefully it won’t cause issues with nursing, but I guess if it’s meant to be, it will.

Now that it’s official, and I start back tomorrow, I’m so excited I can’t sleep! :D

Thank you all, once again. I truly appreciate your input.

    Have a wonderful night. :)

  • It is always difficult to separate from your bub. Is your study part time or full time? Can you gradually ease back into it? Maybe give it a go and see how you feel? You can always change your mind and plans. I find it helpful to write down a pros and cons list, seeing it on paper helps. Good luck with making your decision.

  • Just give it a go, you may find that if you’re not around your baby is likely to drink from a bottle or not rely on so many breastfeeds. Your baby’s at an age where they can eat solid foods so won’t starve. I think you need to give it a go because if you don’t go back at all you may always wonder what it would have been like to have your degree.

  • Please don’t be nervous, just go for it!

I also went back to study after a year off, when my son was one, also still breast feeding and refusing to take a bottle. He was completely fine! Thankfully my parents were helping look after him, but he settled in really nicely, and he ended up drinking water/milk from a cup, though he continued to refuse a dummy and bottle. He wasn’t upset and barely missed me.

Your nerves are probably because you are worried about leaving him with others, which is really normal as you have been the main part of his life for the last year. But you have to go for your own goals too. I have finished my studies and ended up with my dream job, now I juggle working full time with taking him to school, which is hard but it is worth it, you have to feel like you have reached your own potential in life too. Maybe also find other mums at your uni that are studying too so your have some extra support?

    Good Luck!
