Hello!

We have our first baby and he is 10 weeks old. We try give him some tummy time multiple times throughout the day but he hates it. We have a little pillow we put under his chest to make it easier on him. Still hates it. He lifts his head slights a few times but he isn’t using his arms to do mini-pushups and he isn’t really moving his head from one side to another.

Should I be concerned? Any tips on how to improve his tummy time?

  • I don’t think it’s of concern. Alot of babies don’t like tummy time just keep doing what your doing x

  • When my dau g ter was 10 weeks and she was still doing tummy time chest to chest with me. She would lift her head uo to change her position and eventually she did tummy time very well by 4 months. All babies are different.

  • Him pushing up off you chest still counts as tummy time so maybe try more of that first. My first daughter hated tummy time on the floor too so we just did a few seconds at a time and built up

  • Mine was the same – she absolutely hated tummy time!
She eventually learned as she got a bit older. Just gradually increase the time each session.

  • Don’t worry. Give it time. Bub is still very young. I didn’t start till they were at least 3 months for longer tummy time sessions

  • No concern what so ever….. If your MCH nurse is concerned then that’s another matter. Do not be concerned, most babies do hate tummy time.

  • Give them time, as others have said he might not be ready.

  • We found with our little one of they aren’t loving it they aren’t ready, our girl is now almost 4 months and loves tummy time! Hold her head up like a turtle and looks around lol but like your bub at 10 weeks was not interested at all! I don’t think there’s anything to worry about. They mlre you try the better the neck muscles will get.

  • Both my boys hated tummy time on the floor so much so that they both rolled back to their backs at around a month old. Scared the crap outta me with my first. Once they could move around a bit independently they liked it more. As long as he doesn’t spend all his time on his back he should be fine. Tummy time with you is great for both of you. Figure out what works for both of you and go with that.

  • My son wasn’t a fan either but when they lay on you tummy to tummy that’s some tummy time for them. Only want I could get my boy to like it and eventually he was ok. I give him little back rubs after a bath and he enjoys being on his tummy then as well. Maybe speak to your health nurse

  • I’m no paediatrician but my son also hated tummy time. He never really crawled either but was walking by 12 months and now a happy, healthy, agile 15 year old! So, I say who cares if they do tummy time or not, don’t stress as that doesn’t help anyone. I was so anxious for milestones as a new mum but it was pointless in hindsight. I went to nurses, chiros, physios, all sorts of ‘experts’ but I’m sure if your child is growing correctly according to your GP, that’s all that matters.

  • I wouldn’t be overly concerned, alot of babies don’t love it. You could always try out bub on the couch or something and you squat in front. This allows bub to look at you and you can still support bub.

  • Just persist with very small amounts of time and build it up as he gets more confident. It is normal for bubs to not like tummy time.

  • Every baby is different. I wouldn’t be too concerned. My eldest HATED tummy time with a passion but my other 2 always preferred to be on their belly. They only need a few minutes but with my eldest I’d lay her on my stomach on hers and she seemed to tolerate that just a little bit more

  • My little man at the start didn’t like it and would just cry till I rolled him over to his back, so I would lay him on me and so tummy time that way, he will now go on the floor and happily do tummy time, I also put a mirror in front of him and lay next to him so he can see me and himself in the mirror and he loves it
