Hello!

My son is covered in mosquito bites and keeps getting more and more. He has constant sores from scratching and have tried lavender oil and dettol antiseptic cream and nothing helps. Don’t know what else I can do.

  • We use those little wrist bands that are meant to repel mosquito’s and also the spray you use on the clothes and then another for the skin. It may seem overboard to use so much but my son reacts really badly to bites as well and they always come out huge and red. When he was in daycare they almost wouldn’t let him come in one day because they thought he had something contagious

  • I’m allergic to Mosquito bits too and I usually go in the bedrooms look around for mosquitoes and spray them also under the bed and in the day put on insect cream which helps me and them. I’ve never tried the bracelets yet but thought about it. As soon as I see a bit I put No Sting on which helps so much to ease the pain.

  • If it happens mostly in the bedroom, then a very effective way is to install the mosquito net, of it’s outdoor, we use citronella candle, or a homemade insect repellent spray with spearmint, citronella, lemon-scented eucalyptus essential oils blended in rosewater. These are much better than using the chemicals.

  • There is a product called RID that comes in a roll-on and keeps mozzies away.

  • When my kids were small, the mossies kept biting them especially when they were sleeping at night time as that is the best time they come out . A few times they woke up with big ears because they seem to bite on that spot .I tried everything until a commercial came up with the Mortein mozzie zapper to be put on the power point . From then old the mozzies seemed to have gone away , so try that .

  • You can get cheap mosquito nets from Ikea and Bunnings. Maybe set one up over their bed. Keep them inside when dusk comes and maybe consider planting herbs like mint around front and back doors. Do a once over for your flyscreens – we found several holes in ours that our toddler poked through when he was bored!

  • close the house up (what is not screened) before dark. mosquito coils are good but keep them out of reach of the littlies.

  • Our three year old gets bitten heaps and welts up in big sores. We dab lavender oil which works for him but the best thing I’ve found in covering him up. Long sleeved rashie when in the paddling pool, light long trousers or leggings and long sleeved shirt when playing outside at dusk which is when he seems to get bitten most. We found the moo goo insect repellent good too.

  • Will definitely try that and have also been told to use Johnson’s baby creamy oil (green tube) incase anyone else was following.

  • Don’t use them chemicals kids hate the smell use satin body spray keeps them at bay I use all the time and spray and to my kids and nieces and nephew they love it as well http://www.nutrimetics.com.au/tracybaker currently on special until 30th nov $9.90

  • We use aeroguard when outside and it works!

  • Thanks everyone for all the advice, will definitely be trying the vegemite and mint. He is only three and has a four year old brother that’s very adventurous so can’t have too much that they will get into. Thanks so much for all the suggestions.

  • you can get insect spray and sunscreen together that is gentle on the skin – maybe try that

  • It looks like your child is very sensitive to mosquito bites. For me lavender oil is enough but you definitely need something stronger.

  • There is a product that is currently being advertised (I’m not sure what it’s called), but it clips onto your clothes and emits a scent that will keep mosquitoes away. I’ll keep an eye out for the commercial and will post the name of the product when I know.

  • Clear any collected water outside (plant saucers/buckets/uneven guttering etc) to reduce mosquito numbers. We also have an electric bug zapper at the side of our house to reduce numbers too. Use personal repellant every day (Rid/Aeroguard/Bushmans etc). Some herbs help reduce numbers too (mint is an example). Pick some fresh and put under his pillow at night. Keeping covered in loose long clothing at dawn and dusk also helps. If you think they are in his bedroom, a quick spray of the room about half an hour before bedtime may clear out any lurking there. If you have a mosquito net, make sure none are trapped in it before use!

  • First question where is he getting bitten? Outside or inside?
Think about purchasing a mosquito net and try not to venture out at dusk and when mossies are about.
If in the house mosquito coils and netting may help.
Also not sure how old your son is but if he can have/eat vegemite the vitamin B in it is supposed to distract mosquito’s , vitamin B tabs also work.
    This may help.

Of all the insects that bite humans sand flies are probably the most … Promite, Vegemite – anything with high Vitamin B content; Vitaman B1; Vitaman B6; Garlic … The consumption of vitamin B has never been proven to help repel sand flies or …

  • We used to buy mozzie coils. They sit on their win stand, you light them at bedtime and they slowly burn through the night. There are also bug repellent things you can plug into your power point. Or citronella candles. A mosquito net over the bed. On review for MoMs at the moment, Mortein automatic bug spray, set and forget. If out side, something like Aeroguard and again the citronella candies.
