Hello!

My bub is 6 months and has had puree for about a month and I want to start finger food, any ideas on what to serve would be great.

  • Slices of avocado and banana are great. Grated or finger style cheese is a winner for my little girl. For brekki I do up banana or avocado on toast and cut into finger strips. Another good one is cooked pasta, if u didnt mind the mess shake in any puree u have for extra nutrition.

  • We did baby led weaning with our first. Pretty much what we ate she ate. Toast with avocado was one of her favourites tho.

  • Think that meat and eggs are the perfect first weaning foods for a baby. Not only are these animal foods extremely easy to digest compared with cereal grains, but they also supply iron right at the time when a baby’s iron stores from birth start to run low. Followed by veggies when our babies are a bit bigger (try giving a boiled broccoli stalk for example) and fruit. Banana’s is a good one indeed. Bread, cereal and starchy foods shouldn’t be the first foods.

  • There are some good tips on here – how’s your bub going with finger food?

  • I personally believe 6 months is too young. They have no ability to break or chew the food at all unless they manage to break it on their gums. They can only suck on anything at that age. There is too much risk of choking. At 6 months some babies are sometimes teething and either trying to chew on everything or even rejecting solids and certainly not ready for finger food.

  • I didn’t bother with purees with my now 10 month old. I gave him finger foods like bananas, avocado, roast vegies, big pieces of roast chicken. Things that he could easily hold on to and gum or suck to death. I cut them nice and thick, or with banana just broke off into 3 inch pieces. Fruits like apples and pears cut into quarters and lightly stewed are great too.

  • I am following all these great suggestions!

  • Toast is great because it goes mushy and less of a choking hazard. Steamed fruit and veg pieces are good also if they are used to the taste already.

  • I think I started with rusks and toast. Fruit slices were easy. I consistently tried (and still try) with steamed veggies but she didn’t want a bar of it! I also tried slices and frittata.

  • Steamed carrot and zucchini cut into sticks so they can hold it. Pieces of cooked apple, pear perhaps?

  • I gave my daughter bread, crusts, toasts, avocado slices, peach slices, cruskits, ritz, steamed veggie sticks, steamed broccoli.
Anything soft enough to gum and obviously lots of supervision.

  • Many foods are unsuitable for a young baby. Due to chocking hazard. A baked breadstick is a good start as are soft foods such as banana.

  • I would offer fresh fruit fingers, toast fingers. Cheese sticks are good. Milk arrowroot biscuits for a treat. Whatever you choose, ensure bub is supervised at all times in case of choking

  • Soft vegies, soft fruit, cooked mince, rusks, there are some good suggestions given, baby cereal. Cut food into small pieces that can be easily eaten.

  • Finger sandwiches with avocado
    Steamed veggies like carrots/broccoli
    Scrambled Egg
    Sliced Avocado
    Banana

  • Lots of soft steamed veggies. I also bought a silicone food feeder and popped fruit like watermelon and peaches in there that they could suck and chew on without worrying about them chocking.

  • Slices of avocado
Steamed carrot sticks (nice and soft)
Small chunks of cooked mince or soft meat
    Sticks of toast
Slices of boiled egg (If you’re not worried about allergies)

  • I gave lots of cooked veggies, I made polenta sticks adding pumpkin or apple and before I gave it I would fry it off in the pan to make it soft. Baby mum mums are good as they dissolve, rusks I make muffins in the shape of sticks or just small ones.

  • Baby biscuits, rusks, toast cut into fingers, soft fruits, fruit in a mesh holder. Apples and grapes are choking hazards – a child 1st aid course recommended cut grapes into quarters

  • Soft fruits. Blanched carrot, shredded chicken
