Winter is the perfect time to plan and prepare for a flourishing garden come spring. For me, winter gardening focuses on maintenance and planting hardy crops or blooms. First, I like to prune deciduous trees and shrubs while they’re dormant—it’s much easier to see their structure this time of year. It’s also a good opportunity to clear out weeds and add a thick layer of mulch to protect the soil and suppress new weeds from sprouting.
If you grow vegetables, winter is the time for planting cold-tolerant crops like spinach, kale, broccoli, and peas. These thrive in cooler temperatures and can give you a fresh supply of greens even in the cold months. I also prepare my beds for spring planting by adding compost and manure, letting them break down naturally over winter.
Winter is a good time for making garden more bushfire safe, especially if you live on a block. Clearing branches, snipping back vegetation, tidying up the yard, etc.
Well, I will have to get into the Garden shop or Bunnings and get myself some more plants for winter and it won’t be long and spring will come upon us too. Seasons go pretty quickly these days.
I’m trying out mini greenhouses so I can grow flowers and veggies. I’m not sure yet what I’ll be getting, but for the main garden I’ll be weeding (stinging nettles are fun…) and planting shrubberies along the fence to gain height and make it attractive. I’m also slowly filling the house with plants inside!
