Hello!

Looking for reviews and advice on the non-hormonal IUD and on using the combined pill after birth but while also breastfeeding.

I got the Depo Shot after 6 weeks as recommended by my doctor and I had a severe allergic reaction. I’m also allergic to latex and find condoms really hard to use.

What’s some advice on the non hormonal IUD or using the combined pill? I’m worried the pill will dry up my milk supply?! I’m also worried the IUD can be very painful, cause bleeding and have bad side effects. Help!

  • If you’re breastfeeding, you can safely use hormonal methods. They won’t hurt you or your baby. You can start using the shot, implant, Skyla and Mirena IUDs, and some types of birth control pills (called mini-pills) right after giving birth.

  • Copper IUD. I had one 5months postpartum and it’s worked well for me. Didn’t effect breastfeeding at all. Also no heavy bleeding or pain. Definitely speak to a sexual health nurse or your GP.

  • Beeasrfeeding is also a form of contraception. I dont get my periods bacl foe 18 months or so. But thats not to be relied upon, go for the mini pill and condom

  • You would be best advised to speak to your OB or GP about this, however, it’s unlikely you’ll be prescribed the combined pill as it does affect breast milk supply. The mini pill is generally advised for breastfeeding women.

  • Mini pill for me

  • I was pit onto the mini pill, I did not notice any reduction in my milk supply at all

  • Have you looked into the fertility awareness method? You use a thermometer to track your temperature each morning, and it depicts when you’re fertile or not. It’s a natural way worth looking into further if you’re interested :)

  • I was on the mini pill after my first and found it worked well for breastfeeding. Although not great as contraception. I fell pregnant after a few months. ????♥️

  • I’m on the pill and havnt noticed a reduction in mg milk supply so hopefully it doesn’t effect yours sorry don’t know of any other options

  • I was told that bf is also a form of contraception?

  • There are 4 methods of birth control you can use while you’re breastfeeding: male condoms and female condoms – as soon you feel ready to have sex. any progestogen-only method, including the progestogen-only pill, the implant and the injection – these can be started immediately after birth.
