I generally pack, muesli bars, chips crackers, make some savoury and sweet muffins some fruit, popcorn I also make simple sandwiches but than we generally stop for a main meal.
I buy things I wouldn’t normally: oat bars, muesli bars, mini packets of biscuits, dried fruit. Prepackaged saves a lot of pain and small packets mean you can spread them out more.
We like fresh fruits and veggies, roasted broadbeans and chickpeas, or roasted mung beans from the Indian Isle in the supermarket, nuts, trail mix, sandwiches, buns or wraps, homebaked sweetpotato waffles or veggie muffins, unsweetened greek yoghurt with granola/muesli, fried up tempeh (fermented soy, we’re vegetarians) or for non vegetarians cooked chicken, boiled eggs, etc
I usually pack plenty of fruit, some nuts (either mixed or single types) sometimes fruit and nut mix, air-popped popcorn either pre-packaged or cooked fresh in zip lock bags. Biscuits and cheese if a cooler bag is available. Banana bread – great taken in frozen slices individually wrapped – by the time you are ready to eat it has defrosted but is still cool and moist.
I stumbled over broad beans and the kids love them. You can buy them in the health food isle of Coles and Woolies and come in a few different flavours and in snack size bags. We call them magic beans and the kids think they’re magic.
I pack small celery sticks, carrot sticks or small pieces, Kabana whole which is sliced on the way and a container of dip usually capsicum. We keep all this in a small car fridge run on the car battery. It also pays just to rink bottled water on long trips. We travel to Rockhampton every 12 months [ just short of 2000ks from where I live] and find that works well.
I pack sandwiches, fruit and celery sticks. Always have some cup of soups and two bid thermos flasks of hot water. That way everyone is satisfied and if we happen to be able to stop near a chip shop, then everyone is even happier to add that to their lunch.
