A gender reveal party has ended in tragedy, after a small plane involved in the celebration crashed, killing the pilot, with the horrific moment captured on camera.

The expecting parents were gathered in front of their friends and family at the party in Mexico, and were waiting for the small jet – a Piper PA-25-235, to fly past and reveal whether they were having a boy or a girl.

In a video uploaded to social media, the plane can be seen flying over the happy couple and their guests, and umping a stream of pink coloured powder, revealing the baby is a girl. But as guests screamed in surprise at the news, the video footage shows the plane veering upwards, and one of its wings collapsing.

As the aircraft spiralled out of control, the video pans back to the happy couple and guests, completely oblivious to the tragedy that had just unfolded.

According to local media, the pilot, Luis Angel N., 32, was rushed to hospital suffering serious injuries, but the Aviation Safety Network reports he later died.

It’s not the first time that a gender reveal has turned deadly. In 2019 a grandmother was killed at a gender reveal party in Iowa after being it by shrapnel from a homemade pipe bomb, that was built by the family to shoot out coloured powder.

In 2021 a 28-year-old dad-to-be was killed in New York after the device he was building for his child’s gender reveal exploded. Another man was killed in Michigan in the same year after being hit by shrapnel from a gender reveal cannon at a baby shower.

While gender reveals have also been responsible for wildfires, a waterway contamination and explosions.

  • Gender reveals are getting so fancy these days.
I didn’t find out the gender of any of my kids, the big reveal was when bubs was held up to me.

  • It looked to me as if the thing they had on the ground with all the sparkles shot something upward that impacted the wing of the plane.

  • gender reveals seem very unnecessary/

  • People keep trying to “outdo” each other. It’s very sad. I’d rather spend the money on a pre birth getaway and keep the gender to myself and let others be surprised by the arrival. For all three children we decided to not find out beforehand.

  • This is so tragic. Why is a gender reveal considered so important? Everyone trying to do bigger and better.

  • Thats so sad. Why would people not keep it nice and easy rather than pushing it to this level?

  • That’s horrific news. I prefer the gender reveal when you cut into a cake or something else that’s less showy. My condolences to the pilot’s family.

  • What an awful loss . Terribly sad for those related to the pilot, and those who attended.
Sometimes you have to wonder what the appeal of a gender reveal really is… there are so few guaranteed pleasant surprises in life, why not wait to find out at the birth. I had a Harmony test because I was ancient pregnancy-wise, and was offered to know the gender, but kept the envelope sealed. Everyone wanted to know, but I was happy to wait and meet the little one on arrival day. Each to their own of course, but do Instagram and other social media platforms have to know?!

  • Oh this is so sad. Definietly not the way anyone would want to remember a gender reveal :(

    • I am wondering if guests actually noticed the crash

      • Maybe not directly, but I’m sure they were made aware later. Something they’ll never forget. Very sad

  • This is pretty sad. I don’t under stand the whole gender reveal.
I did it the old fashioned way…after 40 hours of labor finding out what the sex of the baby who had me in pain for so long was. made it all worth while
