Customers are calling for Coles to roll out a new packing option across all stores, after one shopper revealed the new Swap-A-Box option at the retail giant.

A Coles customer shared a photo of the box on Reddit, asking why they’re not available at all stores. ‘Perfect size, so much easier to use and no more torn paper bags,’ they exclaimed.

The post attracted plenty of attention, with people wanting to get their hands on the boxes the next time they shop.

“What are these Swap a Boxes by Coles and how do I get them?! Anything to avoid using the useless paper bags that can’t be reused and that Coles loves overcharging customers for especially since they’ve made them smaller!”

“I have genuinely never seen these, does anyone know if these were these at specific stores or just in a select few states?”

“Loveeeeee this so much. My local Coles has some boxes and it’s true, so much easier to carry. They have a few from the fruit section in self serve.”

According to Coles, the boxes are available to those ordering groceries online.

“Introducing a new, more sustainable way to collect your groceries,” the website explains.

“For just $2, you can choose our reusable boxes when you place a Click&Collect order online. Opt in at checkout, pick up your groceries from your store collection point, and just remember to bring it back when you next shop. We’ll clean it and reuse it.”

Coles is currently trialling the swap-a-box system at the following stores:

  • Woodend, VIC
  • Inglewood, WA
  • Southland, VIC
  • Elsternwick, VIC
  • Caulfield Village, VIC

  • Look interesting. Would be good to see whether it gains traction and becomes the preferred packing option.

  • Well, if you’re still spending your hard earned money at Coles or Woolworths who are making huge profits of us all then why shouldn’t they supply boxes? It’s the least they could do! As long as it doesn’t cost them. We’ve been doing this at Aldi since it opened in my area so it’s not really a new idea. It’s a better idea but not new! Coles and Woolworths should do better anyway! I won’t shop there anymore because of their duopoly on the market and the pittance they give the farmers. You’ve got to stand up some time!!

  • I love this option. Shiploads stores offer a free box to pack your items in except they reuse the boxes their goods come in. Win-win!!

  • Brilliant idea, much more sturdy and can hold more weight than a regular paper bag.

  • What a great initiative, sounds very sturdy. It would be good to use them in store as well and not just for click and collect.

  • Interesting!
Although I don’t know how I could carry very many. I always have bags in my handbag so this would be a bit bulky to bring around.

  • Switch to these please! The bags are absolutely useless

  • I’d use them! Introduce them for home delivery now!

  • I love this idea, they should definitely open it up to everyone.

  • What a great idea! I stopped buying the paper bags when a handle snapped and a dozen eggs decorated my patio. This is a great option for those who click and collect on a regular basis. Hopefully they will roll out some trials in Qld soon.
