As a mum, leaving your 30s behind is a biggie, and turning 40 is often a time of reflection and self-discovery. We forget that clothes and accessories can do so much to lift our mood and reflect our personality, and that shouldn’t stop in our 40s.

So if you’ve meandered off into the fashion wilderness and are desperately searching for your style, we’re going to help you find it, with the help of one of our favourite brands – Motto!

Now, before we launch into our tips for feeling fabulous with fashion at 40, just remember, there are no rules. And the team at Motto are big believers in this too! You’ve earned the right to be whoever you want to and dress however you love to dress. Age is, after all, just a number.

Our tips below are to help steer your decisions and narrow your choices. Because goodness knows, as mums, we’re inundated with decisions every day.

Classic Will Always Be Classic

Some things never go out of style, and there’s a reason. Timeless wardrobe staples give you options that you can use time and time again, and then update with new accessories. Here’s an example of some great, classic pieces to include in your wardrobe:

A Blazer: A well-structured, black blazer will see you through your 40s in style. Pair with tailored pants for a corporate or event look, or teamed with jeans for a more casual, but put-together outfit. And Motto’s gorgeous Black Sequin Trim Sisca Blazer has all the little details to lift any outfit – think gold, embossed buttons, and exquisite lining.

A Sublime Shirt (Or Three!)

Shirts always get a good run in a mum’s wardrobe. Whether you opt for crisp white or bold colours and prints, a great shirt can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Motto’s Blogger Shirts are a perfect choice – the 100% technical polyester is so comfortable thanks to its silky lightweight nature and relaxed style. Plus, they’re easy to care for too!

Other classic pieces that will help you rediscover your style include a great pair of jeans, a little (or long!) black dress, and a pair of wide-leg pants.

A Fabulous Fit

After having children, our bodies are rarely the same, and as we head into our 40s, things change again! So, making sure that garments are flattering and comfortable is a must. It’s not always easy to get the right fit, which is why we adore that Motto has trained stylists at every store to ensure that you leave feeling drop-dead gorgeous from head to toe!

Accessorise, Baby

Don’t be afraid to add new pieces to your accessories. If you’ve always worn the same jewellery and carried the same bag, now is the time to branch out and rediscover your style with pieces that enhance your wardrobe.

A stunning cross necklace is always on trend, and you can go bold with Motto’s Shell Cross Gold Necklace. The Silver Chain Convertible Belt will become a workhorse in your wardrobe – we love a piece that can multitask like a mum!

Quality Is Key

As mums, we need high-quality clothing that’s going to last through playdates, sports training, work, and many, many washes. So, it’s worth investing in pieces that will stand the test of time. And, because we want to leave the planet in great shape for our children and grandchildren, we also want to ensure the clothing we’re investing in is sustainable. We love that the mother and daughter team behind Motto is considered in the approach the small business takes to waste and production.

Trends Can Be Your Friend

Don’t feel that just because you’re not 20-something, you can’t jump on the latest trend. Remember – there are no rules! If you see a piece you love – give it a go. If you need to, try and mix and match it with something already in your wardrobe so it doesn’t feel so overwhelming.

Wear Confidence

One of the most important things you can wear in your 40s is confidence! Sure, you may not feel as confident in your body as you did before you had kids – but your body is AMAZING! So, carry it with pride and adorn it with beautiful clothing pieces that make you feel just as amazing. Don’t let anyone dull your sparkle!

Mouths of Mums is proudly working with Motto to bring you this article. Motto’s emphasis is on style and comfort, ensuring that the pieces you own are not disposable and you’ll continue to wear them for years to come. Every garment Motto offer is exclusive, reflecting their commitment to longevity in both style and fabric.

  • I’m still a couple of years off 40 but I have to say I’ve been struggling with changing clothes that I would wear in my twenties. But also I don’t want to dress too old! It’s a hard concept for me, I will have to go see a stylist to help me!

  • I turn 40 early this year and have been honestly thinking I need a change up from my usual clothes but haven’t had time or energy to even get that far. I haven’t found anything lately that I have liked but are looking forward to checking out Motto. I find in most stores it’s aim for young women or older generation and nothing for the 40’s
