A shocked dad has helped his wife give birth in the front seat of their car, just metres from a hospital entrance.
Madhavi Leuke Bandara was overdue with her second baby when her water broke yesterday. Madhavi and her husband Shyam knew it was time to head to the hospital, so they bundled their daughter Buvi into the car and dropped her at daycare.
The couple thought they’d have enough time to make it to Mater Mothers’ Hospital at South Brisbane, but their baby had other plans. “It was a quick labour, about 2.5 hours,” Madhavi explained.
“It all happened so quickly and before I knew it my husband actually caught the baby in the front
passenger seat.”
The baby boy was born at 8.44am, weighing 3.6kg, with midwives arriving at the couple’s car just as he arrived.
“He was overdue – we were expecting him on 16 January but we are incredibly happy he is OK.”
The mum-of-two says her husband was initially shocked when she started to deliver the baby in the car, but
Mater Clinical Midwife Marine Pacquier said the scene was ‘quite calm’.
“The baby was already out when we got there,” Marine said. “Her husband actually had quite a few tears once he knew everything was ok.”
