Mum throws Kmart party for her daughter’s 13th birthday.

Shannon Cassidy, a mother of two,  shared in the Kmart mums group how she gave the five guests who attended her daughter’s party $30 in cash to spend on whatever they liked at their local Kmart store.

Shannon wrote on her post, “My daughter just turned 13 and at loss of what to do for a party, we came up with the Kmart Challenge’ ”

“Each guest was given a specially made envelope with cash in it to burn at Kmart, then we had lunch at the food court. Easiest party I’ve ever done,” she said.

After shopping they all visited the nearby food court and a stack of cinnamon donuts doubled as the birthday cake she told Better Homes and Gardens.

Her party idea has gone viral on social media, with 4.8K reactions and nearly 470 comments on the ‘Kmart Mums Australia’ Facebook page.

Other mums have shared photos of their kids’ Kmart scavenger hunt parties and we absolutely just LOVE this idea.

  • My daughter is 10 and I think this is a perfect idea for her birthday next year.

  • Think this was a clever idea for 13 year olds.

  • Kmart is large store to let that many kids loose in. I’m guessing they would not all have stayed together. For safety/security reasons I don’t think I would do that.

  • never mind the kid, I would like that for my birthday party!

    • For sure – I love this kind of gift and we do similar challenges and it really is a whole lot of fun!

  • What a fantastic idea I really like the Kmart challenge
as kids get older they will be harder to please and become really set in their own ways so well done mum

  • We have not done this for a party – but have done this at other times with a $20 limit.

  • Mine would love it ! I think for 13yr old girls shopping is the best indeed. However they might not all find Kmart the best of stores. My girl and her friends love Jay-Jays, Supre, hair dressers and nail bars. I like simple birthday parties. We often let our kids invite 5 friends and take them bowling, lasertag or to the movies, followed by a visit to a food court and sometimes sleepover.

    Love it

  • I like the food court idea because the guests and party girl would be spending time together, but the K-Mart Challenge might be a bit solitary and commercial. I think they could have enjoyed other shopping centre activities like a movie, ten-pin bowling, or laser tag together and then some time together at the food court.

  • What a brilliant idea, as they get older it’s hard to figure out what to do for birthday’s especially on a budget.

  • I’d comment on the original post but the Kmart Mums Australia page deleted and blocked my profile for no reason. I’d never even posted or commented on the page. The admin is snarly about members being on Kmart pages

  • I’m not sure if this was brilliant or a bit scary. Either way, if it worked for her and her daughter, that’s the most important thing.

  • Surely something different. And there were just 5 guests so easy to handle. Not a bad idea at all. 🙂
