We love a good hack, and mum-of-two Sydney Meisel has knocked our socks off with her transformation of a second-hand playhouse into the iconic Bluey Heeler House.
The 27-year-old mum of two from the US told Mouths of Mums that her four-year-old son and two-year-old daughter are OBSESSED with Bluey – as are so many other Americans!
“We’re even currently in the process of doing a Bluey themed decor for their bathroom,” explained to Mouths of Mums.
Sydney shared her creation in the popular Bluey Mums Facebook group, and was flooded with praise.
“We got the playhouse from a friend of mine who got it second hand from another family. So, it was VERY well loved by the time we got it,” Sydney said.
“The playhouse desperately needed to be revamped, and I didn’t know what to do with it for a whole, but decided to go with the Heeler House since the whole family absolutely adores Bluey and my son’s birthday was coming up. So, it was a nice birthday surprise for him.
“It took me roughly a month to get the house started and finished. It had to be completely sanded down, and completely cleaned out as I found some mould growing inside of some the pieces. So, it had to get pressure washed to make sure all the gunk was gone. I then had to prime everything to make sure it had a good base for the paint to stick to. The painting took the longest, as I had to work on it in increments on weeknights after my husband got home, and on weekends.
“I was able to drop off my kids with family for a while, so my husband and I could get the house moved into our playroom and set up for it to be a surprise for the kids. I wish I had video of them seeing it for the first time, because they were absolutely thrilled with having their very own Bluey house. They’ve been non stop playing in it since it’s been brought in, and I doubt they’ll stop anytime soon.”
Sydney meticulously matched up paint colours to get the exterior of the house looking just right, and even found bath mats to match the watermelon and kiwi mats in the Heeler House (they’re actually bath mats!).
If you’re looking to replicate what Sydney has done, she used a Step2 Welcome Home Playhouse, but they’re difficult to get a hold of in Australia (and expensive!). Your best bet is to search your local Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree for a secondhand find!
Sydney also kindly shared her pain colour list, although the brand she used (Bher) is only sold in Home Depot in the US. But you may be able to get the colours matched:
- Exterior – Bher chopped dill (green)
- Bher storm lightning (yellow)
- Bher roulette (red)
- Bher join de vivre (purple)
- Bher crystal cut (white)
- Interior- bher storm lighting (yellow)
- Bher solar energy (yellow)
- Bher Moroccan spice (brown)
- Bher chopped dill (green)
- Bher four leaf clover (green)
- Bher ethereal mood (light blue for sink)
- Bher perennial green (dark green on door)
