There’s no doubt that our beautiful babies are the best gift we could ever receive while in hospital … but we’re thinking a gift bag stuffed with Chanel products comes a close second!

One hospital is raising the bar when it comes to showering new mums with gifts, by giving their patients Chanel gift bags containing full-sized luxury products.

Chloe Tucker, from Netflix series Owning Manhattan recently revealed that New York-Presbyterian Alexandra Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns gave her a luxe gift bag after she had her baby, and shared a video unpacking everything inside.

It included facial cleanser, Coco Chanel perfume, lipstick and a note: “Congratulations on being a new mom. Here’s something special from the hospital.”

While the pricey gift bags may seem like a huge gesture, the hospital does reportedly charge US$35,000 per birth.

  • I think more practical items are appropriate. Let’s hope this is just an American thing and we don’t go over the top.

  • I hope this doesn’t become a trend in Australia – whilst some mothers might find it a necessity to have luxury brands, I don’t know what kind of message this sends. I mean, for any hospital (even private) that is such a waste of money.

  • I have heard of this happening overseas but when I saw this I thought it was happening here too but thankfully not. I’m sure it’s coming though. Sure it would be nice to have a gift bag but a hospital should be chosen on the quality of care it provides and not “kickbacks”. Also, the level of competitiveness would be crazy and people would be comparing contents. I was happy with my Bounty Bag.

  • This is a bit over the top for me, I’m afraid, and so too is the cost of the of the birth at that particular hospital. I guess if you can afford the hospital then you would feel entitled to a bag of Chanel goodies. I was lucky to get a presentation bag of sample goods for both myself and my baby to try out and hopefully buy forever afterwards and it was not a private hospital but a public one!!

  • Something that helps you still feel like yourself after birth. What a lovely gift! That definitely comes with an expensive room

  • What new Mum wouldn’t enjoy a gift like that from the hospital after giving birth. Most of us are over the moon just to have a new person in our lives but a small gift is nice. I’m just wondering though if every new Mum gets a gift or just because she’s an actress

  • Well wouldn’t we all enjoy that level of luxury. Or even something more modest. I got the bounty bag, and not even a particularly good edition of it according to friends who’d had babies at different times. I would have loved a bag with one or things for me, not just the baby.

  • With how much Americans have to pay to go to hospital they can afford to be a bit lavish and every hospital should give a gift – it’s the least they can do! I didn’t get anything from the hospital. My kids get a little knitted beanie each from volunteers, but that’s about it.

  • Seems some people havent read the article.
If I was paying $35,000US so around $68,000 Australian then I would be thinking that they could very well afford to give me a chanel gift bag thank you very much. I would be wanteing silk pillowcases and wonderful bathrobes in my room as well

    • A very high hospital rate indeed ! At least it’s kind of good that te client pays for the gift bag themselves and that it isn’t paid out of some kind of goverment fund: it would be wrong when all of us have to pay for a gift bag for some

      • I disagree with this mum reader, I am sure people did read the article, I personally think a chanel bag is over the top. What new mum wants this! I could be wrong, maybe the rich do want this when they give birth but personally, I could think of a million other things that would be more practical or nice.

  • Wow what a generous gesture ! I wonder if it was a private hospital ? I had my kids in Northern Ireland and don’t think I received any type of gift bag from the hospital. But friends and family compensated that with their royal gifts and cooked meals for 10 days.

    • Hands on help from friends and family after the birth and when home is a wonderful present. When people help with cooking meals it is a huge help. We appreciated any help and support with meals; gifts were lovely but cooking and providing a meal or meals to someone is an act of kindness.

  • We received bag full of baby and parent products which was most welcome. The bag of products and the wealth of information was much appreciated and needed. We also received handmade items from a community group that knitted cute little booties, beanies, jackets and other baby clothes; again so appreciated.

  • This is obviously not your everyday hospital as what hospital has enough money to buy guest Chanel bags? Most hospitals are in need of money. Lovely gift but I would rather the money be spent on saving lives and buying things that are really needed for patients and families who are staying in the hospital

  • Wow would get nothing like this in OZ UNLESS you were well off and rich enough to have private hospital cover….

  • I would expect nothing less when you’re paying through the nose just to have a baby. Give me public hospitals anytime plus they should give you something special for that outlay of money.. We get a baby bundle from public hospitals. ????

  • Now that’s one amazing gift bag, wish I got something like that.
We got the standard Bounty bag filled with samples and information. I did go private with my births so with all the money we spend on Private Health I’m sure they could have supplied me with a much more fancier bag than the Bounty bag.

  • Okay, that is the right amount of boujee a new mum needs when coming home, how lush!! But I guess that’s the sort of cute touch you can get when a birth costs *$35k*. I’d much prefer waltzing in and out of the hospital without any fees, thank you very much
