If you’re anything like me there are two types of children’s toys that really grind your gears…. Noisy toys and ones that cause destruction. Noisy toys are one thing, there are MANY that end up “disappearing” randomly at my place. But I must admit, I can stand noisy toys for short periods of time. When it comes to destructive toys though, they are an absolute NO GO in certain areas of my house, number one being any living spaces with floorboards…. which is why I’ve compiled a list of kids toys that won’t kill your wooden floors.

There is a time and a place for noisy and destructive toys, yes, they have huge benefits for your children and we all bite the inside of our lip and encourage the kids to play loudly and “creatively” when possible, though let’s be real here, sometimes you just want your kids to play with toys that aren’t going to send your anxiety levels through the roof whilst you try to get some washing folded. It always seems like the kids find the craziest things to do whilst you’re on the phone / eating a Tim Tam in the cupboard / doing the dishes / making beds / just trying to claim 5 minutes of solitude (which we ALL deserve), so why not give them toys that wont kill your wooden floors (or your sanity).

Here is a kid approved list of kids toys that won’t kill your wooden floors:

  1. Beanie Boos

Have you seen how cute these little guys are? They’re adorable little soft creatures that are collectables… meaning SOFT TOY PARTIES for everyone.

  1. Dress ups

Always so much fun dressing up and using some of that incredible imagination. The kids can be anything from a police officer, to a pilot to a princess. Let them play out the scenario’s of their dreams without making a ridiculous mess.

  1. Puzzles

Puzzles are a nice and CLEAN activity your kids can do all by themselves, my trick is to give them a puzzle that is completely achievable by themselves so you can take the 10 minutes you need to clean the kitchen. Do a harder one with them later when you’ve finished whatever it is you needed to get sorted.

  1. Finger puppets

A nice non-destructive idea is finger puppets. The kids can either make their own, or if you have some on hand, they can organise a show for you to watch later.

  1. Card games

Depending on their age, card games are a fun way to ensure your house isn’t destroyed. Try out some UNO for the older kids and games like snap for your younger ones. The only thing here is to try to make sure no one ends up crying, which is usually how things end up in my house.

The types of toys and games that I tend to avoid are things like unsupervised play dough, kinetic sand, paint, hard and heavy plastic toys, TOY CARS (wow they can do some damage!) – these are more outdoor toys at our place! Rest assured, if you do tackle games that cause destruction to your floors, there are plenty of options to help clean up the mess nice and quickly, and if you have scratches from serious game play, take a look at our recent article on how to fix scratches in wooden floors.

  • Kids love to swim. A friendly swimming pool is essential to teach your kids to swim. Swimming is an important activity that helps to improve fine motor skills. Thanks for sharing a great article.

  • Banana Boat? I would not put that on the list after the recent recall! We use Ocean Australia sunscreen for kids. Safe ingredients, safe for environment and Australian made!

  • Good tips. We put carpet down where my toddler plays but we still have scratches on our timber floorboards from matchbox cars & other toys

  • I can’t believe I am saying this out loud but I love my peace and quiet when everyone is out of the house. I even wear rubber soled shoes so I don’t clack on my floorboards. In saying that I let my kids roller skate around the house and so do I! It doesn’t even mark the floor (we have Impala skates) and it is great for a rainy day. Fun without leaving the house!

  • We put foam mats down on ours as our kids are only still little and we wanted to reduce the impact of any falls, especially heads!
Our kids love toys with lights and sound.

  • I always thought the bey blade ‘stadiums’ were a complete waste of money. Until I saw the damage they had done to our wooden floor. In retrospect really wish I had spent the $20 on a stadium!!!

  • My problem is other peoples children and their toys that have disfigured my wooden tables by thumping the toys on the surface – hard to fix this problem

  • I’ve never found the need to line up for a special buys item. I find it to be the same price as anywhere else and I would never buy things like a tv from an unknown brand. Most things aren’t actually any cheaper than anywhere else they’re called a special buy because it’s a special product that’s never stocked in store.

  • My boys used to love going out into the yard and kicking a football around (it was one of the soft ones or they’d play cricket with the sponge like balls. If it was raining too much they would play games on the computer or watch television. They did hate being cooped up inside too much though

  • All fantasic ideas that were all popular in our home. We ended up putting a carpet square on the the floorboards in my son’s play room so he felt more comfortable on the floor playing. It was his area to do with what he wanted.

  • Nice practical suggestions, but it’s not always easy to get the kids to play with the things you’d like them to.

  • I figured that having children basically means no nice things for the next few years. They won’t be young forever and things can be replaced.
