If you’re anything like me there are two types of children’s toys that really grind your gears…. Noisy toys and ones that cause destruction. Noisy toys are one thing, there are MANY that end up “disappearing” randomly at my place. But I must admit, I can stand noisy toys for short periods of time. When it comes to destructive toys though, they are an absolute NO GO in certain areas of my house, number one being any living spaces with floorboards…. which is why I’ve compiled a list of kids toys that won’t kill your wooden floors.

There is a time and a place for noisy and destructive toys, yes, they have huge benefits for your children and we all bite the inside of our lip and encourage the kids to play loudly and “creatively” when possible, though let’s be real here, sometimes you just want your kids to play with toys that aren’t going to send your anxiety levels through the roof whilst you try to get some washing folded. It always seems like the kids find the craziest things to do whilst you’re on the phone / eating a Tim Tam in the cupboard / doing the dishes / making beds / just trying to claim 5 minutes of solitude (which we ALL deserve), so why not give them toys that wont kill your wooden floors (or your sanity).

Here is a kid approved list of kids toys that won’t kill your wooden floors:

  1. Beanie Boos

Have you seen how cute these little guys are? They’re adorable little soft creatures that are collectables… meaning SOFT TOY PARTIES for everyone.

  1. Dress ups

Always so much fun dressing up and using some of that incredible imagination. The kids can be anything from a police officer, to a pilot to a princess. Let them play out the scenario’s of their dreams without making a ridiculous mess.

  1. Puzzles

Puzzles are a nice and CLEAN activity your kids can do all by themselves, my trick is to give them a puzzle that is completely achievable by themselves so you can take the 10 minutes you need to clean the kitchen. Do a harder one with them later when you’ve finished whatever it is you needed to get sorted.

  1. Finger puppets

A nice non-destructive idea is finger puppets. The kids can either make their own, or if you have some on hand, they can organise a show for you to watch later.

  1. Card games

Depending on their age, card games are a fun way to ensure your house isn’t destroyed. Try out some UNO for the older kids and games like snap for your younger ones. The only thing here is to try to make sure no one ends up crying, which is usually how things end up in my house.

The types of toys and games that I tend to avoid are things like unsupervised play dough, kinetic sand, paint, hard and heavy plastic toys, TOY CARS (wow they can do some damage!) – these are more outdoor toys at our place! Rest assured, if you do tackle games that cause destruction to your floors, there are plenty of options to help clean up the mess nice and quickly, and if you have scratches from serious game play, take a look at our recent article on how to fix scratches in wooden floors.

  • From the picture, I was expecting the list to include vehicles that had rubber wheels or something. That would have been useful as it’s the cars etc that get pushed round in the floors or worse, the kids stand up, put all their weight on the cars and run. That one really bugs me as it wrecks the wooden and carpet toys. Not to mention it’s a reminder that I can no longer (if I could ever) bend in half and touch my toes

  • I wish I had wooden floors but I guess with little kids is better to have tiles but definitely now a carpet!

  • I agree with all of these toys except for the puzzles my son has wooden ones and he always nibbles on them and marks the floor with them too. Therefore I’ve put them away as a no go toy.

  • Play mats are great for all types of games and protect all floor types at the same time.

  • We have a toy mat that if they want to play with things that will scratch the floor they need to be on. Plus it’s warmer in winter

  • My kids love playing with blocks, but they keep on changing the preference depending on their mood these days they are more in kinetic sand

  • love this list of alternative toys. Additionally, I have bought the Kmart foam play mat tiles for our wooden floors which protects them from all those toys that could scratch. Also than provides a soft area for my 16-month-old,

  • My youngest loves her wooden blocks, lego and cars and also puzzles, dress ups etc. I’m afraid my youngest is a thrower and damages are easy done. The older ones love card games, table top tennis and board games. The biggest issue here is the bikes, skateboards, skooters and roller blades that are transferred from the backyard through the house to the front and often used in the house on the way outside. Idem with balls, don’t know how often I have to repeat no balls in the house.

  • I can hear my dad-no riding inside the house….then no high heel and now is no babywalker ????

    • My little girl and her cousin were given the wooden doctor kits from Kmart for Christmas and I was able to purchase children’s size scrubs from this website. https://www.rmfscrubs.com/
We made some bandages from an old sheet and the girls have been treating sick soft toys and bandaging up family members. We love watching their make believe play.
