What appears to be a kind-hearted gesture from a Bluey fan has been revealed as a scam targeting vulnerable parents on social media.
A Facebook post doing the rounds on social media features a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe that’s been transformed into a Bluey-themed car. The photos are accompanied by a caption claiming that the poster’s son is no longer using it and she wants to give it away – as long as the shipping is paid.
And that’s where the scam comes in. The person asks that the postage be paid via PayPal’s ‘friends and family’ option, rather than goods and services. Personal, or friends and family payments, aren’t covered by PayPal Purchase protection.
A warning about the scam has been shared in several Facebook groups which include hundreds of thousands of Bluey fans, with some mums coming close to parting with their cash.
“When she asked to be sent money I told her “send me a photo with todays date written on it with dry erase marker” and they never responded.”
“I almost fell for this!”
The best advice to follow is, if it looks to good to be true, it probably is. Social media is awash with scams, as are email inboxes, so make sure you look at everything as a possible scam. Don’t click on any links you don’t recognise, or give any of your details without verifying who is asking for them.
