Having a children’s birthday party at a park is pretty common – and so are the two top concerns: will it rain, and will there be enough spare tables? While we can’t control the weather, one family has decided to take control of the table situation, and it’s ruffled a few feathers.

A note was left on a public park table in the US, claiming it and the surrounding tables were reserved for a birthday party. The note, and an image of three tables draped in tablecloths were shared to reddit.

“Reserved for a birthday party,” the note read. “Please respect the space we’ve set aside and do not use our tables. This is a four year old’s party. Don’t be the one to mess it up. Thank you.”

Rude park note

The reddit user who uploaded the images arrived when the park opened, and said the tables were already set up, even though the park doesn’t take reservations – which means they had been claimed the night before.

“Busy public park on a hot Saturday/Labor Day weekend. Seems super entitled. Park has been open for 4 hours and no sign of them. All the other tables are full.”

The reddit thread has attracted more than five thousand comments, with most flabbergasted that anyone could be so selfish.

“No shame,” one person commented. “Be respectful about where and how you remove and place their things, but other than that, shared services by definition are shared. If they cannot be responsible about keeping track of time, that’s on them. I guess they have more adulting to learn. And who’s to say when folks who do this will ever return? People can forget about their laundry for days.”

“Nah. If having a designated space is that important, secure a private venue,” commented another. “Or, you have a handful of people actually there to hold it down. Can’t just drop sh*t off and act like it’s there to be reserved. Most cities have areas that can be reserved on the cheap specifically for the purpose of not hogging public picnic areas that are available on first come basis.”

  • Personally I think that when you want to claim a table, you need to be there with your stuff, you can’t claim a public item with a note.

    • I agree, other people may have special plans too.

  • Take the note off, rip it, throw it in the bin and the entitled problem is solved. They need to get there early like everyone else to guarantee a spot. No excuses.

  • It seems similar to people claiming chairs with a towel at a pool. If you want a chair or a table, a towel or a table cloth is inadequate. You need people on chairs and at tables unless you have paid for the chairs or tables.

  • It’s ok it’s only once maybe and for birthday! Sure for couple hours. People why you get disturbed from everything!!

    • Mom459320 it would be okay if this was a one off but it seems to be happening a more and more. I have a disabled sister and when we go to the park someone gets there early to secure a table and chairs so we have time to get her ready and she can have a seat. I would never think of leaving a note because I am not the entitled type

  • Seems pretty selfish to me.
You can’t expect to just put a note on a table to reserve it for the day.

  • Self entitled! Rude of them……………if they wanted a table that badly, go buy one and take with you.

  • I think that is a little rude – if you got there first and reserved it and had people sitting there, fair enough, but not just leave a note and expect to hold for as long as you wanted

  • What a joke. Everyone knows the rules. You have to get there early to secure your spot! The nerve to leave a note and not even show up.

  • I might try this next time I want a few tables for lunch with my family and friends. I. am sure that my wishes will be respected NOT! What an absolute cheek this person has.

  • Too bad, if they’re not there then they can’t hold the tables.
There are 4 empty tables for however long that people could have used, been and gone in that time. Seriously, people can be so selfish.

  • Oh gosh, Atleast get there early and reserve if not too bad. I would just rip the paper off and throw it away, and enjoy the day.

  • Entitled! They could have at least said what time the party was.

  • Ridiculous…that’s not how the world works

    Reply

  • This isn’t fair unless there are actually people there with the tables. And even then…. three?

  • If you want a table you get there early and reserve…not leave it for no one else to use for 4 hours

  • Very rude. Definitely not allowed especially if they are sitting vacant for four or more hours before they arrive. Others may have been out for a breakfast picnic or arriving early to claim them for a party they had planned too. There is not even a time on the note. When we do parties like this we arrive early and hope for the best. They are public tables that don;t take reservations.
