Pregnant model mum Chrissy Teigen recently sent tongues wagging after sharing a nude selfie, but it wasn’t because of her bare bump. It was the acid reflux tape on her belly.

Chrissy captioned the Instagram story selfie with, “Thank you @doctorberlin for my acid reflux tape (it works!!???) and for being my main man for many years!”

The mum-of-two was shouting out Dr Elliot Berlin, a prenatal focused chiropractor. While kinesiology tape is often used to help pregnant women support the muscles of their expanding bellies, there are some who claim it also works to help with indigestion and acid reflux in pregnancy.

Acid Reflux In Pregnancy

Indigestion and acid reflux, or heartburn during pregnancy is super common. It’s also really uncomfortable, makes it hard to sleep and is sometimes downright painful. It usually happens after eating or drinking, but it can also creep up a while later.

Pregnancy hormones are to blame. In early pregnancy your hormone levels are changing a lot, and this can cause heartburn. But in the second and third trimesters acid reflux is usually caused by baby pushing up into your stomach.

There are some proven ways to help easy acid reflux in pregnancy including:

  • eating smaller meals, more often throughout the day
  • not eating just before laying down or going to bed
  • sitting up while eating
  • chewing gum
  • sleeping on your left side.

But what about this acid reflux tape?

Acid Reflux Tape For Pregnancy

There have been some studies to show that using kinesiology tape for indigestion can help ease the symptoms. Chiro For Moms explained in a YouTube video that taping a pregnant belly can help promote lymphatic drainage and decrease inflammation.

However other experts say the jury is still out. “Using kinesiology tape for acid reflux is not a known, evidence-based remedy for acid reflux relief,” OB-GYN at Duke Health Jordan Schaumberg, M.D. told Romper. “Kinesiology tape is more commonly used for orthopaedic ailments, such as pulled or strained muscles and joint pain.”
