Rebecca Judd gets real about the post-baby ‘sausage shelf’, otherwise known as the C-section scar.

Mum of four, Rebecca Judd, has opened up about her very different birthing experiences on a recent episode of her KIIS network radio show, The 3PM Pick Up.

Speaking with cohost Katie “Monty” Dimond, Bec revealed all about delivering twin sons Darcy and Tom, 6 months, via cesarean section, calling the procedure “the worst thing I’ve ever done.”

“I’ve measured my scar. It’s 12 centimeters. It’s very, very low. It’s practically on my public bone. I don’t know how Tom’s head came out of there”!” She said.”But, compared to having a natural delivery, it kills me. It is far more horrific and the fact that you’re awake during major abdominal surgery is mind boggling and freaky.”

She recalls,  “I remember I was lying there on the operating table and I started pretty much having a panic attack, my heart was going nutso – I felt like it was jumping out of my chest.

“And I think ‘am I going to die? What’s going on?’, which actually was completely normal.”

“When all the meds wear off, the pain is excruciating,” she said.

“After I had [five-year-old son] Oscar, my first child, naturally, well, I had an epidural, but as soon as that wore off, it hurt a little bit. I used a lot of ice. But by the next day or two, it was fine.”

Talking about her scar she adds, “I’ve spoken to girlfriends about it and they’re like, ‘this ledge, this sausage shelf stays with you your entire life.’

“If you wear compression and tight clothes it makes it flatter but ladies, if you’re thinking of an elective C-section but you’re baby is in a normal, natural position for natural delivery, I’d go natural all the way.”

Can you relate to Bec’s analogy? How would you describe your c-section scar?

  • Unfortunately C sections carry risks & I can relate to the pain after I had to have repair & reconstructive surgery on my reproductive organs so I could have children. To help relieve the pain you should take the medication as soon as it is due. I have chronic pain from several diseases after a major accident & my specialists created a management plan that involves taking meds at set times rather than allow the pain to control your body. I just set the alarm on my phone to remind me when they are due.

  • I had a Caesarean birth after 14 hours labour for my second child, as she was in distress. Having had a natural birth (24 hours labour) for my first I can compare the two. I have a huge scar (it was 46 years ago) and have been embarrassed by my ‘shelf’ for all these years. I would recommend a natural birth every time, the pain is soon forgotten, the stomach is forever!

  • My first child, 8.5 years ago, was an emergency c-section after 20 hours of labour – bub went into fetal distress. I had a panic attack on the operating table and had to be knocked out with a general anaesthetic, which meant my husband had to leave the theatre. It took me years to recover psychologically from this. Probably should have had professional counselling. Physical recovery from the surgery was the worst thing I had ever been through. I couldn’t believe the pain!! I vowed NEVER to have a caesar again! My next baby was due 23 months after the emergency c-section. I refused to go through that procedure again (although was told a planned c-section wouldn’t be as traumatic to the body as the surgeons won’t be in a rush). I had a successful VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean) with baby #2, and again with baby #3 two years after #2. Vaginal birth was a lot easier to recover from, apart from the anal fissures, which can still play up 7 years after my first natural birth! :/

    • Oh! And the sausage shelf! I have a tiny bit of a pooch but I have never been concerned about it. I don’t really notice it. I think it may have been a little issue for me back in that first year, but it’s all okay now. I do do a lot of lower ab work during workouts, which has probably helped. And I had never thought to measure my scar! Have just done that and it is 16.5cm long! WHOA!

  • I found my c section with my second (after a natural drug free birth with my first absolutely traumatic. I can relate 100% with what she is saying. Also having to walk down to special care nursery every everyday for a week every three hours, starting the day after, definitely didn’t help.

  • I had a C-Section and I found the experience ok. I don’t think anyone should be advising anyone else what to do when it comes to the birthing experience.
