Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup plain yoghurt
  • 1 tsp lemon
  • 1 tsp tumeric powder
  • 2 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp ginger, freshly grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 500g chicken fillets cut into bite size pieces
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 1/2 cup canned tomatoes
  • 1 cup thickened cream
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Serve with basmati rice and garnish with coriander

Method

  1. Combine the marinade ingredients in a bowl then add the chicken and stir until the meat is covered with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for 2-3 hours.
  2. Heat the butter over high heat in a large fry pan. Add the marinaded chicken to the pan and fry until cooked through - it should take only a couple of minutes (depending on the size of your chicken cubes).
  3. Add the tomato puree, cream, sugar and salt into the pan. Turn the heat down to low and simmer for 20 minutes. Add more salt to taste if required.
  4. Garnish with coriander and serve with steamed basmati rice.

  • This butter chicken recipe sounds delicious! I’ve never made it from scratch. Usually if I’m making it at home, it’s straight out of a jar.. Thanks for sharing this recipe, I’m keen to give it a go. Hopefully the family will enjoy it as well and we can add it to our meals list.

  • I love a good butter chicken recipe and this one seems to check the box! Butter chicken is packed with flavor and usually not spiced up and has a rich taste that is liked by almost the entire family. This recipe will be liked by even my children as ot seems to offer a thick mild curry.

  • I love butter chicken but not too spicy. This recipe looks like one I’d enjoy, especially since I prefer things on the milder side and can easily skip the coriander garnish as I am not a fan of coriander. The blend of yoghurt, spices and cream sounds like it would make the chicken tender and the sauce smooth. Definitely a recipe I’d like to try.

  • Thank you for this delicious meal. I love spicy chicken curry. Never had a chance to make this butter chicken. I saw many recipes of this delicious types of curries. But this looks different with sugar. Maybe little away than normal spices. I m gonna make it for sure. Thank you

  • Great tip with the disposable gloves for the handling of the chicken.

Love (and who doesn’t!) a good butter chicken – so moreish!

I have all these every day ingredients at home in fridge/pantry so keen to make this.

Is the canned tomatoes, supposed to be pureed tomatoes as method states to add ‘puree tomatoes’?

  • With another cold snap due I think we”l still be enjoying recipes like this for a while. This to me is a warm, comfort food and so easy to reheat when only the two of us are home. I love all the flavours of indian food and feel like I’ve really achieved something when Ii make it.

  • Honestly, this butter chicken recipe was a lifesaver. I threw the chicken in the marinade during nap time, and by dinner, it was tender and packed with flavour. The sauce creamy, tomatoey, and just the right amount of spice felt like a hug in a bowl. My teenage kids actually ate it (miracle!), and I didn’t have to bribe anyone. Served it with rice and a sprinkle of coriander, and boom dinner done. One less battle today. Highly recommend!

  • Our family loves a good butter chicken, especially through winter. Nothing better than a dish completely made from scratch like this. Will definitely be trialling this one for the family. We normally add a slight touch of cream at the end just for that added creaminess. Thank you for sharing, time to start cooking

  • We love butter chicken in our household. We tried this for finner last week, it was a hit. Hubby and both kids went back for seconds. Their only critique was they wanted more 🤣 i also likes how the ingredients are everyday basics so it meant i didnt have to go out and purchase a whole lot of new items

  • This looks and sounds delicious. Packet mixes and jar sauces never seem to hit the spot for Indian so I am keen to try this. I also noticed big packs of frozen naans at coles the other day so keen to try them. Also a great reminder that I need gloves- thanks!
