  • IGA back to school snacks for the WIN!

I was pleasantly surprised with the cost of the products in IGA! The black and gold range is so affordable and the quality is not lost just because they are cheaper than brand name items! • Good range

Visiting IGA is a bit of an adventure as I don’t normally shop there and I feel like I’m discovering new things.

The Black and Gold range provided almost all the pantry staples I was looking for to bake up some good lunchbox treats.

I was only left without chocolate chips - which I couldn’t find in the black and gold range.

The taste and quality of these products seem to be as good as other supermarket ranges. School kid approved!

  • Budget-Friendly Staples, Big Smiles & Joyful Lunchboxes

I’ve been using a whole range of BLACK & GOLD staples lately, and they’ve honestly turned p lunchbox prep into something fun and creative. Their cocoa powder and thickened cream make easy & rich tiramisu, velvety, budget-friendly, and always a winner at family picnics. The BLACK & GOLD choc chips melt beautifully too, perfect for dipping fresh strawberries and rolling them in their fluffy desiccated coconut for a simple, delicious treat the kids get excited about and adults love too.

Their frozen corn kernels and peas are naturally sweet and vibrant, great for tossing into rice shapes, pasta salads, or adding a pop of color to lunchbox sides. And with their plain flour and corn flour, I’ve made everything from soft wraps to bunny-shaped pancakes and crispy veggie fritters - all of which are both notorious and kids love to eat.

What I love most is how much the kids enjoy it all. Whether we’re packing for a picnic or getting ready for school, these homemade snacks feel colorful, nourishing, and full of joy. They’re everyday ingredients, but they help me create food that’s fun, delicious, and made with love.

  • Back to school Bliss Balls and cupcakes

Did a quick shop at our local IGA to give some black and gold products a try. While we managed to find everything we needed to make some yummy Bliss Balls and cupcakes. It was difficult to locate some products as they weren't as prominent on the shelves as other more well known brands.

Once home, we set off on our baking adventure to create our yummy school treats. I have to say everything turned out perfect and absolutely no difference in taste and quality. Will definitely be giving Black and Gold another go!

    Recipe for Bliss Balls:

    2 cups raw cashews

1 cup pecan halves or nuts of choice

    1 cup oats

    1 cup pitted dates

    1/4 cup chia seeds

1/2 cup cacao powder (less or more depending on taste)

1/4 cup coconut oil (less or more to get consistency)

    2 tablespoons maple syrup

  • Back to School Cupcakes

Using as many Black & Gold ingredients as we could we made chocolate cupcakes for back-to-school.

Quality of the ingredients was on par with top priced well known brands and we noticed no difference in the resulting cupcakes which we make regularly.

I will say it was difficult to find Black & Gold products on the shelf. They were not in the prime eye-level shelf positions, rather we found we had to search for them and found them located on bottom or top shelves whilst competitor bands where much more prominent the shelves.

We will however definitely buy these products again.

  • Budget-conscious yumbo lunchbox treats

I’m deep into the unpaid component of maternity leave, so budget-conscious healthy lunchbox meals for my kids are a priority. Add to that being a time-poor mum (who isn’t?) so I tend to have a few very simple fave home-made snacks on high rotation. I popped down to my local Stirling IGA to see which Black & Gold products would tick all those boxes for me. I bought Black & Gold Australian rolled oats, Black & Gold Australian-made frozen puffed pastry, and a 1kg block of Black & Gold cheddar cheese (does any one else’s kids go through cheese like crazy?) I was stoked to see that most Black & Gold products are Australian made - this is something I’m really conscious of in my shopping and try to support Australian-made where possible. Using the rolled oats, I made simple six-ingredient spinach and oat pancakes, and I used the puffed pastry and cheese to make delicious three-ingredient cheesymite scrolls. My daughter kept pinching the spinach pancakes off the cooling rack before I could even put them in her lunchbox, so it’s fair to say they were a massive hit. Overall I was really pleased with the Black & Gold options in stock at IGA and will add these to my regular pantry-restock shopping list.

  • Easy breezy

IGA makes it easy for those back-to-school moments. Not only is it just down the road but black and gold products are cost effective and taste just as great. In our lunchboxes we tried some new recipes…

Vegemite scrolls - they didn’t look like they should but sure do taste great! Plus only 4 ingredients (puff pastry, Vegemite, butter & cheese)

Choc chip cupcakes - fun to make with the kids, they loved licking the bowl and a real hit for all kids!

Egg & bacon bites - a great way to add protein to the kids diets and oh so tasty!

  • IGA makes school lunches easy and affordable

An easy shopping experience at IGA was had and the black and gold products were easily recognisable and very affordable.

Pasta salad for lunch that only takes 10 minutes to make plus refrigeration time.

I will definitely shop the black and gold range again.

  • Super easy purchase.

We popped into our local IGA to start planing our oldest lunch box now she’s about to start school. We managed to get a bunch of the basics from the Black and Gold brand like flour, cheese and tinned veggies.

We thought we would try doing some corn fritters for her lunch as it’s a good way to get some protein in and thankfully she loves them cold.

I was surprised at the range, the quality was on par with other home brand products, and the prices were pretty good too.

I picked up a number of staple pantry items from IGA and with a few fresh items I had at home, set to work cooking up a storm with my son. All quick and easy to prepare and easy to store ready for lunch boxes on those busy mornings.

How good is it when you find snack ideas that aren't expensive that your child would actually eat!! IGA, you have done it! • Lunch box favourites, fraction of the price

My kids love to snack, but I feel incredibly guilty when I purchase premade snacks. Black & Gold offer the basic staples to create yummy snacks that for a fraction of the price. And better still, my kids get fresh snacks without the crazy amounts of sugar, salts and preservatives. Tuna bake for lunch. Their fav fruit cut into shapes. Sliced carrots, banana bread, corn fritters and 3 ingredient scones that are sugar free and can be made sweet or savoury. The kids had a blast having a cooking day, and I was able to make over a couple weeks worth of snacks to freeze. If you have any dietry requirements, then this isn't for you. Black & Gold don't cater for that.

If every school week is more like an episode of Survivor at your place, don’t worry, you’re not alone! The struggle to stay on top of the school week mayhem is real – so we’ve put together a bunch of clever ideas to give you back some precious time (and sanity).

There’s nothing difficult about these tips, just solid advice and ideas from a mum who’s been in the school trenches for over a decade.

1. Teach The Kids To Make Some Simple Breakfasts

Healthy Breakfast Cookies
Four Ingredient Healthy Breakfast Cookies

Hang on, this is about breakfast, why are we showing you a picture of mouth-watering cookies?! These are Four Ingredient Healthy Breakfast Cookies – perfect for a prep-ahead school day brekkie!

Depending on their age there are so many safe and easy breakfasts kids can make themselves. From toasties, to yoghurt pots prepped the night before or just cereal. Not having to make breakfast for everyone will literally save you hours every week!

2. Lay Out Clothes For The Week

Use a hanging organiser or labelled baskets for each day. Include uniforms, socks and undies. Kids can dress themselves without the drama of missing items. I’ll be honest, my kids’ uniforms are expensive, so I wash during the week as they only have a couple of sets. However, if nothing else, having just socks and underwear sorted for the week is an absolute lifesaver!

The other huge help is not having to pre-treat stains on my kids’ uniforms, nobody has time for that during the week! My extra tip here is to use a great quality laundry detergent that is powerful enough to remove stains in-wash, so you don’t need to worry about pre-treating. Biozet Attack’s range is perfect, and while each product packs a punch when it comes to lifting stains, I love that each targets different issues. For example, Biozet Attack Plus Eliminator Power Capsules eliminate 99.9% of odour-causing bacteria – great for teenage boy school shirts! There’s also Biozet Attack Plus Sensitive 2L which is dermatologically tested, but still powers through stains.

3. Use A Family Calendar System

Whether it’s a wall planner, a shared phone calendar or a digital calendar, you need everyone to be able to track all activities, due dates and after-school commitments in one place. It also helps gives the kids a a sense of responsibility and doesn’t leave everything on your shoulders!

4. Plan A Weekly School Admin Session

Answer school emails, sign permission forms, top up canteen accounts and check term calendars in one go instead of daily interruptions. You may only need to do this fortnightly or monthly, but just make sure you schedule it in your calendar. Trust me, it saves so much time compared to juggling things bit by bit!

5. Quick-Fire Cleaning Sessions

Set a timer for ten minutes in the afternoon, pop on some music and everyone tidies their zone. This includes the kids emptying their lunchboxes, washing their drink bottles, handing you any notes and putting their clothes in the wash. Small bursts like this stop the house turning into chaos by Friday.

6. Have A Snack Station

Child holding Babybel Mini Rolls over her eyes.

Keep a drawer or fridge shelf filled with ready portions. Kids can pack their own snacks for school, and also grab something to eat when they get home. Think ahead and include them in the weekly shopping – ask them what snacks they would like (and cross your fingers they’ll still like them all week!).

7. Set Up A Family Charging Station

One spot for iPads, laptops and phones. No searching for chargers or discovering a dead laptop ten minutes before school! Make sure each child puts their school device on charge when they get home, as part of their Quick-Fire Cleaning Session.

While we can’t promise your school weeks won’t have moments of chaos, taking some of these tips on board will save you time – even if it’s just five minutes here and there. It’s about building realistic habits for the whole family, that will hopefully bring some calm to the school week.

  • There are some great ideas here! I just use an old school paper calender but its so helpful to remember all the important dates – i always buy a family planner one so theres columns for each of us to write what were doing om certain days so we never run out of space! I need a snack station, but struggle to have healthy (or healthier) choices in the cupboard apart from the usual chips, rice crackers and museli bars!

    Reply

  • There are some good hints here! I already do have a little snack station in my pantry – a large container filled with all sorts of bars, etc. It’s the first place the kids look for something to eat. I do like the idea of a charging station but I don’t think it would work in my house. Everyone seems to like charging things in their room and it could look messy with multiple cords.

    Reply

  • The struggle is real so I’m loving these hints. I especially like the idea of getting the kids involved in preparing their own lunches and snacks and offering a variety of options that will hopefully encourage them to make healthy choices now and into the future.

  • A great article full of very helpful and handy tips. Most of these I already do but it has reminded me to add a few other things to my list to organise before the school year starts in a couple of weeks. Helpful tips like this are so great as you can never remember everything and this sure has given me a few extra things to think about.

  • I love this article. I can relate to a lot of these ideas. For instance, I have a snack shelf in my pantry so my kids can choose and pack their own snacks. No more asking them what they want. We also have a family charging station in the kitchen. iPads, laptops and phones are only allowed to be charged on the kitchen bench. I love the healthy cookies. I must give these a go. The family calendar system is a must too!

  • I totally agree with most of these. We bought some inexpensive cereal dispensers, and that made mornings much easier. And school admin? For me, that is every Wednesday right before a regular appointment. It fitted in perfectly, I never overlooked anything, and if I didn’t need it it was a glorious burst of free time.

  • I love this article and the tips and already follow many of them. I have always been a big fan of schedules and planners and they simply make sense and make sure everyone in the family is on task. I also love snack stations; one for the fridge and one for the pantry; again it makes sense and makes preparing food and lunchboxes and snack times easy.
