Oh the convenience of being able to make perfect porridge with zero effort!!
Thank you grain master!
Now the weather is cooler I am really appreciating your ability on the porridge front. There is nothing like enough porridge for every family member easily made (with simple dishes to wash) and it cooking while you shower, get dressed and pack lunches!
Make your family some porridge tomorrow - you won't regret it!

Another great recipe tried today. It was very easy to make. Just put the lentils and water to cook in the Philips Grain Master Rice Cooker and left to the playroom to have fun with my beautiful daughters. When it was ready, put on the side to cool it down. In the meantime chopped onions, green olives, fresh chives, parsley and oregano with a drizzle of olive oil, white wine vinegar, salt and pepper. Mixed all together. Fried some halloumi cheese and that was it, lunch was done! Quickly, easy and delicious, thanks to my amazing Grain Master Rice Cooker!

I have now owned the Philips grain master for about two months. Very simple to use as it does the thinking for you by the weight of your food it adjusts the time. Following the recipes in the booklet and changing to your tastes is so easy. If food goes up between the lid and the lid plate it is easy to remove the inner lid for cleaning and it just pushes back in. Same with the steam hole plastic part.
Risotto is so simple as you use the quick cook function to cook off your onion, mushrooms and garlic if wanted. You then change the setting to standard function and add rice and stock. It states to add cut up chicken or prawns and soft vegetables when it has five minutes left to cook. I have found that I add these ingredients (not prawns) from about half way through cooking with excellent results. Keep you eye of the moisture content and add more stock if needed. I love this appliance and use it often. I recommend you to make the porridge. It will be the best you have ever eaten.

We tried quinoa in the Grain Master for the first time and it cooked perfectly.
We made the Asian quinoa taboulleh from the recipe book and it was super easy and really delicious. I'm pretty sure this will become a regular dish in our household! It's great to have something you can make in advance as well (I cooked the quinoa and prepared the other ingredients then just mixed it all together when we were ready to serve.)
I'm pleased with the warming function on the Grain Master as well. My old rice cooker would rapidly dry out the rice on the warm setting, and it would burn and stick to the bottom. The Grain Master doesn't do this and everything I've left on warm so far has kept really well.

The recipes that came with the user manual were very varied! I liked how it gave me a broad overview of ideas of how to use the rice cooker! However, I felt the recipes could be organised a bit better with ingredients listed according to the sequence they fit in the recipe. I always find that much easier to follow.

Easy vegetable risotto (served with pan fried chicken)
We made a really easy vegetable risotto for dinner that we were very pleased with. We just fried some onion and garlic in olive oil in the Grain Master on the quick cook function and then added the aborio rice. We chucked in some frozen veggies and stock (just guessed the amount of liquid!) and then cooked on the standard function.
After it was finished we stirred through a little butter and left it on warm for a bit then served topped with Parmesan cheese and some pan fried chicken. It was so easy, and would have been a lovely meal without the chicken too.
We're finding the Grain Master easy to use, easy to clean, and great for producing delicious, well-cooked meals for the family.

I've never had a rice cooker with a reheat function before and I had precooked cous cous that I needed to reheat (which also had chicken and vegetables in it). Although the instructions don't mention cous cous I thought I'd just try the reheat function anyway.
I followed the instructions which say to add a little water to the food to prevent it from becoming too dry and used the reheat function from the menu. 25 minutes later I had a perfectly cooked and very fresh dinner that didn't seem like it had been reheated, but cooked fresh! Much better than in a normal microwave.

6 months on and we couldn't imagine life without it!
About 6 months ago we were sent the grainmaster to put through its paces and see if it lived up to the hype. I can honestly say that the Philips Grainmaster is now an integral part of our kitchen. We use it to create a quick rice side dish, or to make risotto as a main (which the kids love) and this winter I have been using the fabulous delay start to ensure everyone wakes on these cold winter mornings to piping hot, delicious porridge! My husband is a chef and even he says he doesn't know what he ever did without it. My 9 and 7 year olds have been able to contribute to dinnertime as it's easy enough for them to use! They're currently on clearance through TVSN so grab one while they're cheap!!

Rice cookers are a great invention aren't they? I love how you can cook it and walk away. I love how you know it's going to cook right the first time and you won't need to re do or put up with uncooked or over cooked rice and grains. I would recommend this to my family and friends and others because it's just so darn good and affordable and all of the above. Thanks Philips you have done it again. Cheers!

Ok so I really dis like when you go to cook rice on the stove or in the microwave and the texture becomes off or you over cook or under cook or the rice sticks to the side of you pans and containers, so annoying. Using this rice cooker it simply does not do it, it cooks the rice perfectly every time without exception. I would recommend this to anyone and all family and friends. It is a good price too . Thank you Philips

My little boys love cooked rice to eat, but I was getting so sick of every time I cook it, it would flow over the container or the stove too. Then you have to get the right consistency and cook it so it's not under or over. So I got fed up and bought this rice cooker. What a life saver. The rice obviously never spills over any more and then the rice is always cooked perfectly. I love not having to clean up a mess in the kitchen any more.

I love the Philips Grain Master Rice Cooker it cooks the rice quick and easy. Its fluffy and smooth. It is a lot easier than doing the old way on the stove top and having to constantly stir it and plus you don't have all the starch. I've been using the Philips Grain Master Rice Cooker for a few months now and use it at least 2-3 times a week with different grains. However, I'm not sure if i've missed something but I can't find the off switch for it? There is the keep warm function which is amazing, but when i'm done, i always switch it off at the power point rather than an 'on/off' switch that i thought would be located on the cooker itself. It's not an issue and doesn't affect the usage of the cooker but just something i thought i would raise.

The Philips grain cooker is very easy to use. I've used it to cook brown rice and white rice. It was much easier to cook brown rice than on the stove and the cooking was even all the way through and times really well. I just press the required button and done. Also the recipe book was great to inspire me to use it for cooking other grains. I made porridge this morning and it was very easy to follow and make though it did take 1 and a half hours so you have to time it better, but happy with the results of the porridge. My bub enjoyed it too. The only thing I can say is that it is quite big so you need to make sure you have space for it and also the measuring cup they give you is pretty small and only 160mls. Should be just a standard cup I think so you will actually use it. I ended up just using my own measuring cup.

So in my ignorance I have only ever thought of using this for tea and lunch.... well, looking in the recipe book I discovered this awesome recipe for breakfast - hooray for Saturday morning cooked brekky! I love being able to try something different to the usual bacon and eggs.
It is very easy to use and make however I have learned that to get such awesome results, you have to be organised and not leave it to the last minute to prep it otherwise you will be waiting 95 minutes till you eat!

It is Sooo super easy to clean it almost cleans itself!
After cooking any grain in this appliance, it doesn't matter how much mess there is although normally little to none, it is so easy to clean... Warm water and small amount of dishwashing liquid on your brush or sponge and it practically wipes clean... In fact you could probably use a piece of paper towel to clean the insert. Use, wash put away... Less dishes, less mess and more time to enjoy with your family. What more could you ask for?!

Quickly cooked fluffy soft rice with none of the mess!
Easy peasy... I am always busy running around after my young children so majority of the time I don't have very long to fuss around in the kitchen. My family and I love to eat pasta, rice and other grains and many times I have burnt the water out of the saucepan cooking these because I got side tracked with the kids which is not only messy but dangerous. I am loving how easy the grain master cooks the elements and also that I can safely leave it without any worry while I attend to my children and other household duties. Highly recommend!

I have used the grain master a few times now and it gets easier every time and less mess too. Not only is this appliance great for set and forget cooking but it is very easy to clean and maintain too. I love cooking all sorts of grains in it especially plain old white rice as the mess this usually makes using a saucepan is not pretty and once baked onto your stovetop is hard to remove. You don't have to worry about any of that with the grain master... What a great invention!

Risotto - Quick and so easy, even my 9 year old could do it!
We've had some trouble with the porridge side of things - too sloppy. We are yet to try the recipe from the book with less liquids, but I know once we figure it out, it will be perfect.
Tonight, we decided to allow Miss 9 to try her hand at using the Grain Master. Since receiving the Grain Master, Risotto has been a favourite in the household. The kids say they would eat it every night of the week, and I have to say it stands up to even the best risotto I've eaten at a fancy restaurant.
I cut up bacon and chicken for her and showed her the 'quick cook' button so that she could use the pan like she would a frypan. She used the good old tupperware chopper to do the onions and threw the lot in. Once they had cooked nicely, she put in two cups of aborio rice, then chicken stock to cover the rice, about 2cm over the top. She put it on the Brown Rice function and we went outside to play cricket! It didn't even take half an hour, and the house smelled so good. I forgot to take a photo of her with her masterpiece, and when I went to take a photo afterwards, it had all disappeared. The kids all had seconds, and my husband had thirds! There was even enough for my dad who popped in on his way home from work - my daughter was so proud to be able to dish it up for him.
The Philips Grain Master Rice Cooker has fast become the most used kitchen appliance we own. Everything I have used (apart from the porridge - which was still delicious, just a bit runnier than we like it!) has worked beautifully and tasted amazing. I seriously can't recommend it highly enough.

‘Trust Your Intuition’: How To Advocate For Your Child In Hospital
Mother’s instinct is a funny thing. At home, we trust it without question. But put us in a hospital setting with an unwell child, surrounded by doctors, nurses and monitors, and suddenly we start doubting ourselves.
What if I’m overreacting? What if I’ve got it wrong?
So we stay quiet, even when we know something just isn’t right with our child. I’ve been there myself – when my usually ‘tough’ son was doubled over with stomach pain. I was told in the emergency department that it probably wasn’t his appendix. But I knew he wouldn’t have begged me to take him to hospital unless it was serious. Because I know him better than anyone. Turns out, it was appendicitis.
It’s a really common place for parents to land. You’re grateful for the care your child is getting, but at the same time, you feel this huge responsibility to speak up if something doesn’t feel right.
Here’s the thing though: that instinct you’re feeling? It matters more than you might think.
Why your gut feeling matters more than you realise
According to Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager, Canterbury Hospital, Leticia Jackson, parents bring something to the hospital that no test or machine ever could.
“Parents often say they ‘just know’ when something isn’t quite right with their child, and in a hospital, that gut feeling is incredibly valuable,” she explains.
Leticia Jackson, Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager, Canterbury Hospital
While medical teams rely on observations, tests and equipment, parents know the little details. The way your child usually smiles. How they react when they’re tired. What’s normal for them.
So when something feels “off”, even if everything looks okay on paper, it can actually be an early warning sign.
“When parents trust those instincts and speak up, this creates a powerful partnership that can sometimes catch a problem before it becomes an emergency,” Leticia says.
Worried about speaking up? You’re not alone
A lot of parents hesitate about advocating for their child.
You don’t want to come across as difficult. You don’t want to question the people caring for your child. And sometimes, you just don’t feel confident enough to push the issue.
Leticia gets it.
“It is completely understandable for parents to feel hesitant,” she says. “No one wants to be seen as difficult or to second-guess the hardworking people caring for their child.”
But here’s a helpful way to look at it: you’re not challenging the medical team, you’re helping them.
Parents are the constant. Staff change shifts, care for multiple patients, and rely on snapshots of information. You’re there the whole time, noticing the subtle changes.
“Our medical team doesn’t view a concerned parent as overreactive, but as a partner,” Leticia explains. “Your voice matters.”
Remember, we know our children better than anyone.
What to do if you’re worried: the Raise It process
If you’re in a NSW public hospital or health service and you’re worried about you or your child’s condition getting worse, there is a clear process you can follow called Raise It.
Raise It is designed to help patients, carers and family members get help fast if they’re worried about a change in their loved one’s condition.
Here’s how it works:
Talk: Start by speaking to a nurse, midwife, doctor or health worker about your concerns.
Ask: Still worried? Ask to speak to the nurse or midwife in charge and request a Clinical Review.
Call: If you’re still concerned, you can escalate further using the Raise It process to get urgent attention from a senior health worker.
You don’t need medical knowledge. You don’t need to be certain. If you feel something isn’t right, or your child is getting worse, Raise It. You just need to speak up.
What should you actually look out for?
Sometimes it’s not one big, obvious sign. It can be small, subtle changes that just don’t sit right.
Things like:
Changes in breathing (fast, laboured or noisy)
Skin looking pale, mottled, or developing unusual rashes
Your child being unusually drowsy, floppy, or hard to wake
Confusion or behaviour that’s out of character
Pain that isn’t improving with treatment
Or simply that feeling that your child is getting worse
And sometimes, it’s just that gut feeling you can’t explain.
That’s enough.
“You are helping us, not bothering us”
If there’s one message Leticia wants parents to take away, it’s that you aren’t bothering the medical team, you’re helping them.
“In my years as a Nurse Unit Manager, I can say with absolute certainty that many critical changes in a child’s condition have been identified first by a parent. While our clinical staff are highly skilled at performing regular observations and interpreting data, parents are the only constant presence who truly know their child’s baseline behaviour, personality, and what is normal for them.
“I have seen numerous instances where a parent’s insistence that their child is “just not themselves” – despite vital signs appearing relatively stable – has prompted a deeper clinical review that uncovered everything from early signs of sepsis to a life-threatening respiratory crisis.”
The Raise It process exists because healthcare teams know how important parents are in keeping children safe.
“Speaking up doesn’t mean you don’t trust the team,” she says. “It means you’re partnering with us to make sure nothing gets missed.”
And if you’re still worried about being judged?
“Whether your concern turns out to be something or nothing, your instinct to raise it is always valid.”
Even as a healthcare professional, when I took my soon to the ED when I was concerned, I felt awkward about speaking up, worried I was making a big deal out of nothing (even though i would never tjink this about a patient’s family if the roles were reversed). The message in this article is so important. Always stick to your guns. Always speak up and advocate for your kids – they can’t do it for themselves.
And honestly, some medical staff are idiots. I vividly remember the night two doctors huddled over my son’s lung x-rays. I hadn’t been allowed to accompany him to have them taken as I was pregnant. They finally told me solemnly that they were preparing to do emergency surgery as there was something in his lungs – “we don’t know what it is, but it’s definitely man made”. I took one look at the x-rays and asked if they’d taken off the battery packs for his cochlear implants, which were pinned to the back of his shirt, before the x-ray. And of course they hadn’t, and of course that’s what appeared to be in his lungs. Honestly!
I have learned many times to always listen to your gut and speak up when you don’t think something is right. This article was a great read, our kids are our world and if we don’t feel they are getting the right help, and we feel it, we need to speak up.
You should never second guess yourself when it comes to yours or your childs health- or anyones for that matter. Go with your thoughts. It is natural to want to protect a loved one especially when it comes to health situations, and the feeling you get when you think you didnt do enough to advocate or fight for them…it is not a kind or nice way to feel. Many people have ended up being heartbroken and picking up pieces for years because of feeling they didnt do enough.
A very good and informative article. I have read so many stories about mums just knowing when things are not right and demanding second and third opinions until they got the right answer. Sometimes mums just know. It is our job as care takers of our families. Listen to your gut!
Years ago, I spoke up for my 14-year-old daughter, but my concerns weren’t fully listened to. I’ve always wished I had pushed harder. She was sent home without much testing, and two days later, she passed away.
So, if you ever have concerns—no matter how minor—please speak up and keep advocating. Trust your instincts; they are there for a reason.
This is so important for parents to know how to raise it further if they don’t think their child is receiving the medical support they need! I know this article refers to the NSW system but other systems have similar procedures just with different names. I know in QLD it’s called Ryan’s Rule.
It’s so important to follow your gut instincts and express your concerns indeed. I have never hesitated to advocate for my children in various situations and I don’t care what other people think about it. Not all doctors and medical staff appreciate it when you question them, I’ve experienced that it may result in angry indignant responses.
How true this is! While nurses and doctors are the medical professionals doing their job on the daily, we know our children better than anyone and what is ‘normal’ for them. I would always speak up if I had noticed any changes in my child’s health and encourage other parents to do so too. No question is silly!
This really is such an important issue and a good topic to discuss with people, I am often surprised that people are worried about being judged. This is not something I care about; the priority is for the care and health of everyone is my family. Parents know their children and need to work with health professionals for the best outcomes for their children.
This is such an important issue to raise, and no one should ever feel ashamed, nervous or that they are being OTT for advocating for their kids, themselves or loves ones in hospital. In QLD we have Ryan’s Rule. A three step process where your concern will be escalated if they believe the patients condition isn’t improving or is worsening.
I have never been afraid to advocate for my children and partner and extended family and also friends. It is so important to listen and to trust intuition. When people have not listened, I have persevered and kept on with insisting on care and making sure they truly listened and took action.

I'm pleased with the warming function on the Grain Master as well. My old rice cooker would rapidly dry out the rice on the warm setting, and it would burn and stick to the bottom. The Grain Master doesn't do this and everything I've left on warm so far has kept really well.

Easy vegetable risotto (served with pan fried chicken)
After it was finished we stirred through a little butter and left it on warm for a bit then served topped with Parmesan cheese and some pan fried chicken. It was so easy, and would have been a lovely meal without the chicken too.
We're finding the Grain Master easy to use, easy to clean, and great for producing delicious, well-cooked meals for the family.

Reheating magic!

Baby bear porridge!

Great flavour perfect cooking
Risotto is so simple as you use the quick cook function to cook off your onion, mushrooms and garlic if wanted. You then change the setting to standard function and add rice and stock. It states to add cut up chicken or prawns and soft vegetables when it has five minutes left to cook. I have found that I add these ingredients (not prawns) from about half way through cooking with excellent results. Keep you eye of the moisture content and add more stock if needed. I love this appliance and use it often. I recommend you to make the porridge. It will be the best you have ever eaten.

Easy to use and versatile too

It's useful for every meal!!
It is very easy to use and make however I have learned that to get such awesome results, you have to be organised and not leave it to the last minute to prep it otherwise you will be waiting 95 minutes till you eat!

Risotto - Quick and so easy, even my 9 year old could do it!
