Hello and WELCOME to our school readiness program where one of our resident leading experts, Sonja Walker, talks us through everything we need to know about our children starting school.

Many parents wonder about the best age at which to send their child to school. In this video, I share some of the latest research about the effect of children’s chronological age on their school readiness and provide ideas about the factors that you should be considering as you decide when to send your child to school.

We will be releasing a new video each day for 25 days so please join us to learn all you need to know about starting school!

  • My eldest could have gone to school when she was 4….she would ahve loved it and handled it wonderfully.
My middle child would have been better starting at age 6
    And my youngest at 5

  • There’s so much talk on MoMs lately about a child’s readiness for school. I was told they start the year they turn 5, and that was it, no questions from me. Does that make me a bad mum?

  • I think the earlier they start the more some kids seem to struggle. Did for us. Thank you for this video watching the rest now

  • It sure does. My third child started school at 4 and a half and she struggled all her life at school. She was never so bad at results that she repeated, but she sure struggled. If I had my time over again, I never would have let her start so young, but there was peer pressure from the school headmaster who would have lost his third teacher unless he had another pupil. So sorry I listened to him for her sake – however she did go on to University when she wanted and got the degree she wanted. Still feel she missed out somehow.

    • i think that you shouldn’t feel guilty love! sounds like your daughter is doing really well actually.

  • My boys started school the year they turned 6 but were ready at least 6 months before they were allowed to go. My daughter starting prep next year will only turn 5 at the beginning of the year. I worry about her as she does struggle with the social side. Her kindy teachers assure me she is ready though.

  • My oldest is 5, in 4 year old kinder and starts pre school next year. Im happy that he is starting school then, I dont think he would have been ready otherwise. Im doing the same with my middle, and i may do the same with my youngest.
