My daughter came back from the Gold Coast and was very unhappy that Jetstar charged her and her friend $50 between the two of them for excess luggage and even weighed their handbags which they have never had before . Has policys change from the ususal . I can understand luggage , but handbags has never been heard of ??

  • Gee really? Thanks for the heads up. It should be on their terms and conditions on their website so will look into this before we fly.

  • The cheap airlines are very strict on luggage limits now a days. I guess they have to make their money somehow. I know when I travelled in Feb, they made me put my bottle of water and magazines on the scales along with baggage

  • Makes you want to stuff things into your pockets so that it ends up being part of your weight (which at the moment they aren’t charging for).

  • Wow, even the handbags were weighed? I’d be in serious trouble if that’s the case

  • Oh dear. I hope your daughter knows for next time not to carry onboard overly heavy items.

  • Wow I didn’t realise it was that expensive. Good to know so I don’t get caught with huge fees. Ouch :(

  • Yes, Jetstar definitely do it. A Mum made up formula with the water in it and her hand luggage was just a tiny fraction over. Cost er her $15.00 She didn’t know if she could get hot water on the plane. Some weigh hand luggage because pilots have to fly according to weight they are carrying. Rex are strict when they have full passenger seats.

    • I have since found out that her plane was delayed for 4 hours and that she used 1 1/2 bottles during that time. By the time they departed her hand luggage would not have been overweight. What rip-off. You are allowed 3 free items for a baby. They could have counted that as one of the 3 and she would have been charged.

  • I don’t know about jetstar but most airlines have policy like that. We recently did a bit of flying did even qantas has policy on how heavy each hand luggage can be, the just don’t weigh everyone but often go on the look of it. We went with Ryanair and lots of people got caught out with the wrong size carry on and had to pay like $100 for underneath storage to get on the plane… It Was strict

  • I think it depends on the size of the bag and if its larger or appears to be overweight( I dont know what the allowed weight is) for a carry on. I havnt flown in a few years but i remember the little carts they had out side the gates. Which said if your bag is bigger than this its not classed as a carry on. For this reason i always choose the checked baggage option and pay the extra costs when booking the ticket… I could not fit everything i need in a tiny carry on..

  • I have never heard of a handbag being weighed

  • Qantas at least has always specifically allowed a small handbag as well as hand luggage. Maybe the size of the bags was an issue?

  • I refuse to fly with Jetstar anymore because of this very reason. I am happy to pay a little bit more to fly Virgin as they now include baggage in their flight prices and there are no sneaky extras.

  • Probably it depends on the airlines. Technically you are allowed just one piece of hand luggage. If you want to carry a handbag, you should put it inside the hand luggage and check that together they are within the weight limit.

    • Good point. I used to do this when travelling with a baby – the nappy bag was the only bag I took onto aircraft.

  • Weighing handbags sounds odd? Maybe check their policy manual and follow up with management?

  • weighing hand luggage is done from time to time (weight restrictions do apply) but I have never heard of handbags being weighed.
