Well when I first heard some if the mums in my mums group say they were going to toilet train/ potty train their 2 year olds in just 3 tiny little days I thought they were totally insane. No way would this work I thought. I looked at my darling little miss two & even though she has always done everything early – rolled at 3 months from back to tummy, walking using furniture at 8 months & by herself at 10 months, had all her teeth before was one – I just new for sure she wouldn’t be able to do this. Anyway fast forward a couple of weeks & these mums where on this crazy 3 day bender (mummy crazy potty bender) all started to turn up to mums group each week with potty in tow & a potty trained 2 year old. So there I stood in complete awe of my friends & their little potty trained geniuses. Seeing this all made me decide if they can do this then so could we. Late last Friday night I sat my hubby down & told him my plan. No leaving the house for the entire weekend & then he could run away to work whilst I tried to complete the last day with miss 2.
Saturday bright & early & the fun begins: nappy off, cleaning products (lots & lots of them), mop & bucket, 2 nervous parents & one very excited little girl. At first it was mess after mess with lots of redirecting to the potty & heaps of praise, high fives, hugs & kisses when even the littlest bit of wee hit in the potty & not the floor. Then something amazing happened – miss 2 went to the potty, sat down & then moments laters she jumped up & yelled “mummy wee”. Sure enough there was the first evidence that maybe, just maybe my little angel could do this. The rest of the day past with a few hits & misses & then bed time came. With this came time to put a nappy on (no way would miss 2 last all night). Well by this point miss 2 had decided she hated nappies now & I had to fight to get one on her – at least tomorrow should be easier to convince her that she didn’t need a nappy anymore I bravely thought. Sunday more up bright & early again (thanks to our 5 month old son) & time to get the nappy off – crying, screaming & Noooo was miss 2 answer to this. Finally nappy comes off & we commence with day 2. Heading towards afternoon nap time & so far no accidents – none at all – so wonderful. Miss two has her nap (with nappy on – still don’t think she can sleep without a nappy yet) & when she wakes up we decide to pop some loose pants on her & head out to the back yard for a bit – see how she goes with pants on. Half an hour in & going well – then an accident, but that’s to be expected. So back inside we all go & then proceed to bedtime. No more accidents were had.
So Monday – day 3 – rolls round & it starts the same as the rest. Then it realised its 5.30pm & we have made the whole day with no accidents & miss 2 can go to the potty all by herself – OMG we/she did it :).
Now part of this 3 day potty training method is the child is to go undie/nappy free for the next 3 months (but they wear loose pants to daycare, out in public. I have to say I’m not a big fan of that idea so decide to pop down to Kmart & grab some “big girl undies”. A quick chat to hubby & it’s decided the whole family will go on this trip – this will be miss 2’s first nappy trip out in public. So I pop a long dress on miss 2 & she goes nappy/pants free. 1 hour later & we head home – accident free :).
Now I don’t believe for 1 second that my miss 2 is completely potty trained as she still wears nappies for sleeps & probably will for a good few months to come, but she now knows how to use her potty & knows when she needs to go. We have had a couple of minor accidents – unable to get undies down in time but no accidents on the floor. Fingers crossed tomorrow at daycare is just as good.
