Hello!

I love the sheer simplicity of little people.  And I think that’s how it should always be for kids.  Life should be simple and easy, and they should be allowed to just be kids (no bikins and sexualizing please, but that’s a whole other story!!).

I was recently standing back silently watching my three-year old enter our local toy library.  She kind of walked around and cased the joint, searching out what she wanted to borrow and sussing out the other kids who were there at the time.  I think she was feeling pretty good about things that day, as she’d recently received a new watch, and was sporting it proudly.  I think the fact she doesn’t know how to tell the time is completely irrelevant considering how cool she was feeling about wearing a watch.

She eventually decided to play with a toy garden.  Before long, another of the kids at toy library came up to her and started showing interest in her game of make-believe.

Then I hear the conversation start to develop….

New Friend – “Wow, I love your watch.”

Miss 3 – “Thanks; it tells the time.”

And they continued to play happily for the next thirty minutes, despite never having met, not knowing one another’s name, and knowing they will probably not see one another again for a long time.

I love that simplicity.  It’s something I hope she never grows out of.  Kids are such beautiful little creatures.  Please try and be mindful of letting your little people stay little for a bit longer.  They have a whole lifetime of being a grown up and having all these crazy responsibilities, and dressing up so they look too old for their years.  And that’s another thing (in addition to the no bikini rule!), those plastic high heeled shoes – silly!  I know little girls love them, but they’re bad for their development, and are a twisted ankle waiting to happen.

Now go and give your little one a big wet kiss – just because.  Because they are simple and pure.  And they say some pretty funny things some time too.

  • I had a good laugh at my little girl at her swimming lesson – a new girl in her group had the same bathers. They just looked at each other with confused looks and then went back to what they were doing.

  • Aren’t they divine. I watched my littlest the other day playing happily with another little kid who did not speak english – they couldn’t speak the same language but they certainly both laughed in the same language!
