It can be daunting for parents to broach the subject of intimate body parts with their children, but this little girl is proving that knowledge is power, revealing her incredible awareness of the vulva and its parts.

A TikTok video of the girl explaining the parts of the vulva was shared by obstetrician/gynaecologist Dr Jennifer Lincoln and has since been viewed more than three and half million times.

While the girl’s identity and age haven’t been revealed, she appears to be around five years old, and she holds a knitted vulva as she explains all of its parts.

“Hi! This is a vulva!,” she says.

“A lot of people call it the vagina, but inside of here is the vagina. This is the outer labia and this is the inner labia. This is the clitoris. Vulvas can come in different kinds of shapes and of sizes and of colours. And they’re all normal and they’re all beautiful.”

Dr Lincoln shares the screen with the little girl, nodding in agreement and adding her own captions:

“If this seems weird or ‘out there’ I want you to sit with that feeling for a bit. We should teach our kids about ALL their body parts. Vulvas and vaginas and penises and scrotums included. It’s not sexual, it’s just biology. And I’m here for it! Well done parents of this amazing little one!”

The video has attracted equal parts support and concern, with some commenting that the girl seems too young.

“They’re way to young for that,” commented Juan Carlos

“She doesn’t even understand, she just got coached into pointing out parts bro,” said Josh.

Other said it’s a great example of how to break down barriers and the stigma around body parts.

“Genuinely explain to me how them learning natural things about their body is gonna rob them of that innocence?” commented Zoe.

“This is everything. nothing about this is inappropriate, she just knows what her body is and how it works!,” said monami.

  • Brilliant. As long as the parent is comfortable in teaching these sort of things then all is good. The child will simply take it on as if you are teaching them about any body part and how it works. I dont think this is weird or wrong for her age at all

  • It must be only me who was mix feeling about it

  • This takes the ‘sexy’ image away completely and makes the whole subject normal. Way to go and do it before they get the giggles talking about their bodies and the stigma should go out the window.

  • pretty switched on for a 5 year old

  • This is great!! The specialist is right – this is just biology and the more we know and name parts of the body (and anything really) the less shame and discomfort will be associated with them.

  • This is a good step forward in removing the stigma of discussing body parts.

  • While I don’ t think there is anything wrong with it and she’s a super cute, smart little girl I don’t think it’s particularly necessary at her age either. Does she know all the parts in her ear as well?

  • It’s a good thing, that her parent have explained her body to her. Nothing sexual about it.

  • I love it. Let’s remove the stigma of body parts and teach males and females alike. Funny, she knows more about her body parts than I did and most men do.

    • I agree, I bought an anatomic female figure for my daughter when she was 5yrs old and she loved it

  • It’s great that she is educated but why tell the world?

    • I agree, very creative knit work and a terrific educational tool.

  • Too young to be discussing such a topic and I am sorry posting on social media is asking for trouble.

  • That’s adorable! Good on her for learning and knowing so young

  • Great body awareness

  • I think it’s fine to have body awareness. She’s too young to know about sex, but it’s great she understands her own body

  • I think its great children know all the body parts and their functions, but I just don’t like when people post their children on social media.

  • I think it’s great that kids want to understand and learn about body parts. It’s important to start conversations early about this topic however I do feel age 5 could be a bit young but I guess it depends on the child and what questions they are asking. Everyone is different and should do what is right for them and their family.

  • I think this should have been kept just for the family and not spread world wide. I agree they should learn about their bodies as soon as possible but not to share it across the social media.

  • Its good education and learning for kids and yes, this clip is cute & funny to have about a 5yo talking about it but I feel it shouldn’t of been shared on social media for the world to see. Something like this is a funny video to keep between family & friends.
I have nothing against a you g child to learn about the anatomy & come to understand it earlier in life but no need to be broadcasted for the whole world.

  • She seems awfully grown up for a 5 years old. I think let kids be kids for as long as they can.
