NSW police report a man will appear in court this morning charged with inflicting critical injuries to a baby in Penrith yesterday.

NSW Ambulance Paramedics called for police assistance at a home in Penrith yesterday where they were treating a 10-month-old baby for severe burns.

The boy had suffered significant burns to his head, neck, chest and back, and was also suffering significant head and facial injuries.

He was taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead where he was placed in an induced coma and remains in a critical condition.

A 23-year-old man was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with recklessly inflict grievous bodily harm.

“We understand that some of the injuries relate to burning of the skin and about 40 per cent of the child’s body. There are other injuries there that appear to be consistent with blunt force trauma,” Detective Superintendent Brett McFadden told reporters.

“What we do know is that the biological mother of the child and the 23-year-old male (not the father) that has been arrested have been in a relationship for the last four or five months and for the last few weeks, they’ve been residing together at the Penrith address,” he said.

It is believed the baby was left alone with the man at the time.

A court has heard the 10-month-old boy was placed in a shower with only the hot tap turned on to clean him after vomiting. The accused then left to put his phone on the charger and have a cigarette.

When he returned to the shower, he discovered the baby’s “skin peeling off”.

The man pleaded to police,  “I f***ed up” and asked them not to tell the baby’s mother for fear he would lose contact with his own “kid, who he recently resumed custody of after the child was previously taken by DOCS.

The court also heard he had “a long record of violence” and was handed a suspended sentence in 2012 for recklessly wounding.

Magistrate Gary Wilson said the baby’s injuries were horrific.

“(The baby received) unspecified head injuries resulting in severe bruising to his skull, face and jaw, the burn injuries noted as being horrific,” Mr Wilson told the court.

Mr Wilson said when arrested by police the man’s behaviour was “inadequate” and “only concern was for himself and whether he would received a custodial sentence and whether he would be given bail”.

“A lengthy custodial sentence is more than likely in this case.”

  • How can anyone hurt a defenceless baby? Throw him in jail for life.

  • Oh no, this is the second report on here this morning about a child being attacked. It’s terrible! These young mums who think it’s more important to have a man around then the safety of their young children. I think the mums are often to blame too, to an extent. I hope this little darling recovers soon, the poor little soul :,(

    • Don’t blame the mother you fool, he did it, he is a grown man who made the decision to burn and bash this baby!

It’s tough enough raising kids when deadbeat dads go AWOL; without idiots like you blaming them further!

      • This is so utterly horrible. It is a fact of domestic violence that some women are so badly physically and emotionally treated that they cannot leave the relationship. Unless you have seen or experienced this, it is a hard fact to believe. That mans actions are deplorable and he ought receive the full force of every applicable law possible.
