With many people still working from home, green therapy is a great way to  switch-off and has been proven to improve mental health. If you don’t have one already, now is the perfect time to set up a home garden.

Whether you are have a garden, balcony or indoor space, gardening is a hobby everyone can enjoy, and Afterpay has pulled together a handy list of all the things you need to kickstart your home garden along with some tips and tricks to guide you along the way.

Top tips for your home garden

  • Plan before you buy: Winter is the perfect time to plant greens such as pak choi, asparagus, broad beans and broccoli as well as herbs like parsley, thyme and coriander
  • Choose your home garden location carefully: Most herbs and vegetables do best in full sun, so make sure you choose somewhere sunny but shielded from the wind
  • Less is more: For watering you will need around one inch per week, making sure not to overwater. A good tip for making sure your plants have enough water is to insert your finger up to your second knuckle. If the soil is dry you will need to top up with water
  • Use your vertical space: If you live in an apartment, growing vining plants including tomatoes, peas and cucumbers can help make the most of your vertical space. Vertical wall planters and hanging baskets are also useful. As vegetables and herbs thrive with good drainage, a raised container can be beneficial for allowing free-draining soil

As a bonus, using Afterpay means you can split the cost of the items you may need to start your new hobby over four easy fortnightly payments, so that your new found green thumb won’t break the bank. Happy planting!

  • Have just helped my youngest son with a big move into his first full time job, in Brisbane. One of the first things we did was to purchase self-watering, planter boxes and pots and plant out herbs and veges, Rosemary, Parsley, Basil, Mint, Spinach and tomato plants to start. It’s made the balcony look more homey and he will soon have the fruits of his little patch to enjoy. We added some succulents and other plants in the courtyard and balcony as well!

  • Having found myself with more time at home of late, I have decided it’s a good time to give “home-grown” a go! I will be trying onions, cabbage, potatoes and capsicum first, as that is what we eat the most of. Would love to also try some herbs and spices too!
