Fire authorities have issued a warning after concerns a button battery in a book may have ignited a fire in a minivan.

Firefighters in North Carolina shared frightening images of a child’s car seat, which was destroyed by fire just after the child got out of the car.

They also shared an image of a book that makes sounds, claiming it may have been responsible for the blaze.

“Once the fire was out The Fire Marshals Office was called,” George Hildebran Fire & Rescue Department commented. “It was determined that a ‘Button Battery’ inside a children’s book left inside the car underneath the seat caused the fire.”

According to the Queensland Government, button batteries aren’t just a potentially fatal hazard if swallowed by children, but they also have a ‘low, but real risk’ of igniting if they are damaged, not fully discharged or if they short-circuit.

  • I never knew this. We do have a couple of books with button batteries but they don’t come in the car with us. My son is past the age of needing to rake a toy with him everywhere he goes.. I’m assuming the normal AA and AAA batteries can also be a fire hazard. I guess we need to remember not to leave things in cars that don’t belong there. Luckily, I did a clean out of my car recently (and surprisingly it’s stayed clean) so I know there aren’t any forgotten toys lurking around in the car.

  • I’m so glad the child was out of the seat before the fire started. It would have been so scary for the parents to think of what could have happened. Those button batteries look so small and harmless but they are responsible for a lot of problems. I’m just glad no-one was injured

  • That’s a bit scarey. I often buy these books (noisey, battery operated ones) for my grandkids. My kids had them back in day too. Must be low risk as I’ve never had an issue

  • Batteries are more dangerous than I first thought. Good warning for everyone.

  • How scary is that? Batteries are such a risk in heat/thebin/ the garbage truck. We know a family whose house burnt down by charging a rechargeable tool battery.

  • That’s pretty scary, always hear about the dangers of them being swallowed, but this is something else. Need to be extra cautious.

  • This is a real eye opener. I’ve heard the dangers of swallowing them but this is something else again. I’ll be avoid items that use them.

  • You simply shouldn’t have button batteries at all for any kids toys. They are super dangerous not just to fire hazards as in this case, but worse, due to swallowing. They cause so many issues if they are swallowed, and at worst, can cause the death of the child.

  • I am always super careful at what toys i let into the car. We have some toys and books to keep my daughter busy but nothing that has batteries. This really caused some damage – how scary for the family. So glad no one was hurt.
