Living on our family property, my children Poppy and Billy are always running wild outside. I find them hiding in the flower beds, climbing trees, racing our three dogs to the dam and generally using their wonderful imagination to discover the fun and magic in the ordinary.

When I started to notice they were coming in sneezing, with watery eyes or scratching irritated arms or legs, I was worried! I didn’t want to stop the joy of them playing outside, given it’s such a big part of our lives where we live, but seeing them suffering from these symptoms was scary.

After seeking advice from a health care professional, we now know these symptoms were caused by allergic rhinitis. Think of allergic rhinitis like hayfever’s year-round cousin, triggering allergies all the time, not just in spring! Knowing these symptoms in Poppy and Billy were caused by allergies eases that stress for me as I know I can help them.

What was interesting was that research by Zyrtec found that nearly 40% of Australian parents are not fully aware of the common allergens that could be affecting children. While many Aussies have heard of hay fever, symptoms of allergic rhinitis can be triggered all-year-round by things like dust, pet dander and mould.

I recently learnt that when left untreated, allergic rhinitis can greatly affect children’s quality of life, including poor sleep quality, fatigue, and daytime sleepiness. This can impact learning and performance in school as well as sports and playtime, which is no fun for them or us!

This is why it was so important for me to collaborate with Zyrtec on Zach and Zoe’s Hide and Sneeze, a gorgeously creative and fun story to help ease that same stress for other parents too. It’s a special book to add to your very own story times

Zach and Zoe’s Hide and Sneeze aims to help Aussie parents recognise the signs and symptoms of allergic rhinitis through storytime. Because unless you’re familiar with these signs, it can feel overwhelming seeing your little ones suffer from various symptoms, especially if you don’t know what causes it, just like I was.

Zach and Zoe’s Hide and Sneeze is available as a free gift with purchase at Chemist Warehouse, Terry White Chemmart and other participating independent pharmacies, from now to 30th November 2024, or until stocks last. It will also be available as a downloadable e-book from local participating grocery stores.

  • My 14 year old son suffers from hay fever but I honestly think it’s better since moving and getting rid of 95% of our carpets. Our youngest looks like he gets hay fever too and also gets itchy when rolling around on the grass. Zyrtec is always in our medicine cabinet at home and always with us when we travel. As they get older and if it gets more severe I’d look into whether they’d benefit from the injections.

  • Now this is one lot of advertising that I really believe will help – and not just children. I was never a hay-fever sufferer or symptomatic of sneezes and colds but I have become so as I have gotten older. Maybe I’ll need the book myself to make sure I am doing all the right things to get a plan in place as it isn’t just spring when I get these symptoms these days.

  • At last a book for children that is about something that affects many children and now they’ll see that it’s nothing to be scared of. I’m 67 and I’ve had to use pills every day for the last 55 years for allergies. I was told I was allergic to something in the air which was frustrating for me. Now I see it was possibly something more common than I thought. Thank you for writing this book.

  • What a great little book to provide families. We have Zyrtec already in the house for particular days where the allergies are running high. Im just grateful that my kids don’t suffer too badly with allergies. Although im finding the older im getting the more im suffering with hay fever and other minor allergies.

  • So tough, allergies can really make living difficult. Especially for children my heart always breaks when I see them.

  • So much to learn from living on a farm ! Not only about allergic rhinitis / hayfever, but also about insects and bugs, animals, plants and crops, equipement and tools, weather and so on. But also about caring for the animals, caring for people and respect and care for the land :)

  • I must admit I have never heard of this specific term. But I do know that my husband has often had allergy symptoms throughout the year and not just in spring. It must be horrible having that kind of condition out on property when all you want to do is encourage your kids to enjoy the fresh air!

  • My husband and daughter has allergies as well and are constantly on zyrtec

  • I agree allergies can negatively affect your well being. I and my younger son suffer greatly for our allergies and they can and do put a dampen on our daily life. Anything that helps kids and their parents learn about allergies seems like a good thing.

  • Allergies are such a pain – not usually very dangerous, but so annoying and sometimes quite debilitating. It can be particularly hard to explain to kids. I really like books as ways to explain things to kids. They’re just the perfect medium to entertain and teach. I hope the book does well.

    • Yes indeed, informative and simple books are a great way to explain and help understand our kids certain conditions and how to best deal with it. Even when they do not suffer from it themselves, it can help them to emphasize with others and help them understand how they may feel.

  • That’s really lovely to be able to put their story into a book, hopefully it will help other families identify the issue in their households. Being sensitive to the seasons and pollen is such a hassle. I have family members who are effected quite badly and it really effects their day to day.

  • I suffer from really bad pollen allergies and i think my daughter is the same. It really is an all year round issue that we have to manage. I buy a box of antihistamines every week in our shopping and always have a stock pile in supply so i never run out.

    • I do understand; we are in the same situation and it really is so unpleasant and does indeed take constant care. We have to follow our care management plans to get some relief from allergies and we also avoid being out at certain times. We also are vigilant and monitor the weather/climate conditions too.

  • I couldn’t live without Zyrtec in the bathroom cupboard.

  • Luckily none of our family members are plagued by allergic rhinitis or hay fever. But I know the best friend of my son suffers from this the whole year through, although more severe at certain seasons.
The free book Zach and Zoe’s Hide and Sneeze is a great initiative to help make parents and kids aware of the symptoms.

  • My issues with allergies and hay fever takes a great deal of daily care and a strategic management plan. My plan was discussed, formed and implemented with my GP to achieve the best personalised program for me. The implementation of the plan means I can enjoy fun outdoor time with the family without suffering.

  • This is a cleverly subtle ad, but there’s no doubt it’s a product that a lot of parents will find useful. I love books as a way of explaining things to kids. They’re really effective and it’s easier to repeat yourself over and over when reading a story. Kids tend to find it an easy way to learn, too.
