After years of silence, Adele has finally said hello from the other side of her incredible weight loss and heartbreaking divorce.
The 33-year-old singer gave an insight into the past few years of her life in a powerful interview and photoshoot, ahead of the release of her fourth album next month. In the interview with Vogue, Adele details her gruelling workout routine, explaining she works out two to three times a day.
She also reveals how her son Angelo is coping with her 2019 divorce from Simon Konecki. “I was just going through the motions and I wasn’t happy,” she told the publication. “Neither of us did anything wrong. Neither of us hurt each other or anything like that. It was just: I want my son to see me really love, and be loved. It’s really important to me.”
She explains that her ex-husband lives across the street, and they share custody of their son. They even hold regular movie nights together. But Adele says the healing process for her son is ongoing. “He has so many simple questions for me that I can’t answer, because I don’t know the answer.
“Like, Why can’t we still live together? That’s just not what people do when they get divorced. But why not? I’m like, I don’t … know. That’s not what society does. And: Why don’t you love my dad anymore? And I’d be like, I do love your dad. I’m just not in love. I can’t make that make sense to a nine-year-old.”
Adele’s incredible weight loss
The singer revealed that her body transformation came as a byproduct of exercising to help with her anxiety. “It was because of my anxiety. Working out, I would just feel better. It was never about losing weight, it was always about becoming strong and giving myself as much time every day without my phone. I got quite addicted to it. I work out two or three times a day.”
But she says her 45kg weight loss hasn’t come without its issues, particularly the intense amount of media attention. “My body’s been objectified my entire career. It’s not just now. I understand why it’s a shock. I understand why some women especially were hurt. Visually I represented a lot of women. But I’m still the same person. The most brutal conversations were being had by other women about my body. I was very … disappointed with that. That hurt my feelings.”
Adele’s first single from her new album is due to drop next week.
