A Melbourne mum has flown to the US for gender-selection IVF, so she could guarantee her fourth child is a girl.

Caitlyn Bailey, a single mum-of-three, conceived her two sons and daughter naturally, but decided she wanted to be sure her fourth child would be a girl. The 31-year-old flew to California last year for the treatment, which she says cost $45,000 in total, including flights, donor sperm and medication.

She ended up with five embryos, four of which were girls and she’s now pregnant with a girl. Caitylyn admits her choices have attracted plenty of criticism.

“I chose to share my story and my journey purely because I thought if there’s people out there that it could potentially help and not feel so alone, that’s why I shared it,” she explained on Instagram.

“I didn’t share it to start online arguments or have you know troll conversations, it’s just, it makes me feel sick to my stomach to think about the negative side of things, I’m all about positivity.”

IVF sex selection is banned in Australia, except in certain medial cases. However, Caitlyn says she didn’t want to ‘end up with 10 children’ just to get a specific gender.

Dr Daniel Potter, from Gender Selection Australia, says women should have the right to choose the sex of their babies.

“I look at it as a reproductive freedom issue. The embryos are the patient’s property and I think people should be free to do what they want,” he told Sunrise.

  • Well I guess shes got the money to spend on things like that.
Its a little sad to me that we have got to this point. Its very clearly telling the child that if you had been born a boy I wouldnt have wanted you and I only love you because you are a girl.

  • It’s not something I feel comfortable with- bar a medical issue, of course – and I think it can be a slippery slope. Look at the gender imbalance in China, for example. Illicit gender selection left a generation of men with little chance of finding a partner because the women didn’t exist,

  • I don’t really have an issue with this. If she can afford it and wants what she wants then it’s her choice. It’s not something I would do but to each their own. If it was something like selecting eye & hair colour etc then that may be going a bit to far.

  • I agree with the rules in Australia that we can’t select a gender through IVF in general for non-medical reasons. Personally I think it’s a dangerous area. We have seen what harm and damage the preference for a certain gender can bring. I think we should be cautious with manipulating nature to such extend that we can pick the gender of our children as if we’re going to the shop.

  • Australia does indeed have tighter rules around fertility and gender selection. It truly is a topic that deserves a great deal of research from all angles and perspectives. Sharing this story is of course always going to get a wide range of views and opinions and that is the risk of going public.

  • in my opinion, we should accept what God blessed us with.

  • This is an issue that does indeed seem to divide people for all sorts of reasons. The amount of money is quite staggering and I do wonder about the ethics. It is a topic and issue that does indeed require further research about the ethics and wider impacts on the industry and society.

  • The only thing I don’t think is right is a single woman wanting to have more children through IVF. There are a lot of women who are unable to have children naturally and they should be able to use IVF. Unfortunately most people don’t have that amount of money laying around. As long as it’s her money and she’s not going to be relying on the government for money then it’s her choice. It’s just something I wouldn’t do

  • Her money, her choice. People say it’s playing with nature and will effect the future……. not alot of people have $45,000 to send on choosing a gender. It’s not going to be a common practice. It’s pretty fascinating that it can even be done! And who knows…. with the way the world is these days, the kids may grow up to decide it wants to be a male!!!! And then all that money was for nothing

  • There are a few issues at play here. I am not really for women who are single choosing to have a baby to raise on their own. Raising children is a big job and it’s one thing to be single because things fell apart, but another to choose it. She already has 3 kids too – all I can say is that I hope considering she was willing to pay so much money to guarantee a girl, that she has the funds to back her so she doesn’t need to rely on welfare. As to choosing gender it is playing God, but I guess people who can afford that kind of treatment would be such a small minority that it shouldn’t be a major issue YET. Unless it becomes more accessible and more widely available, I don’t think we need to worry about our population crashing because people are choosing one gender.

  • This isn’t reproductive freedom as stated in the article
This is toying with the future of the world
Some of us take part in reproductive assistance (IVF or in my case ovulation induction) due to infertility that has always been a matter of if successful you get what you get just like conceiving naturally
What we desperately hope for when we conceive is that we will give birth to a healthy child
Some of us (again like myself) find that reproductive assistance doesn’t work for them and welcome children from the Foster system into their families whatever their gender or health (physical or emotional)
Should you want a particular “toy” to play with go to the toy shop and buy something to put on the shelf so you can get it down when you feel like it
Children are gifts not something you put together like a recipe in a kitchen

  • Personally I think this is a scary development. It leans to much towards buying a baby with a certain sex and to get what I want and have what I want when I want. The miracle of conceiving and that little human being being woven in your womb no matter what sex is just all set aside with this way of thinking.

  • Personally I don’t think we should be choosing the gender of a child. Most of the time when people are using IVF it’s because they have had difficulty with conceiving a child without assistance. Those parents usually just want a healthy child.
I guess if you’ve got the money to spend on such an extravagance, then up to you.
If I had that much money spare there’s a lot of other things I’d choose to use it for that’s for sure!

  • I’m not sure about this, what’s next? Choosing eye colour and hair colour? I just feel like you are messing with Mother Nature and should feel blessed with whatever gender is bestowed upon you. And also 45000 dollars? Really so many people are living paycheck to pay check and a lot of families couldn’t even afford this ridiculous price tag!

  • It is all great, but I don’t understand it. It is so expensive to live fortnightly, so this is just the waste to me. For me the most important thing is that baby will be healthy, but what sex it will be, I think this is way too much to do.

  • Their decision, but something about it feels a little off for me. I don’t quite understand when she already had two sons and a daughter. I’m sure she has her reasons to justify the choice, but I don’t love the thought of this becoming a thing that’s widely available. I’d have to look into it

  • I mean, look if its your own embryo your selecting from, and provided its a healthy embryo, why is there so much negativity towards what and how she chooses to use it. It should be up to her and at her discretion how she chooses to use it, as im sure not everyone would use them all up anyway!
