There are so many sweet treats to indulge in at Christmas time, but a rich, moist, fruit-laden pudding has to be one of the most comforting. And Australia’s very best Christmas pudding has just been revealed!

The supremely lucky taste-testers at Choice had the enviable task of crowning the best puds in the land, blind tasting and reviewing 18 different puddings. They tried brands from the larger supermarkets like Aldi and Coles as well as some smaller brands. And the pudding which came out on top may just surprise you!

What makes a great Christmas pudding?

According to the Choice experts, here’s what make a good pud:

  • Lots of fruit
  • Moistness
  • Flavour
  • Spiciness
  • Maturation

The Choice taste testers reheated the puddings in the microwave according to the directions on the packs before they began chowing down. They tasted the puddings blind, without knowing the brands, and assessed things including the appearance, quality of finish, moistness, flavour, aroma, texture and quality of the mixture.

The judges also looked for good shape, weight, balanced fruit, spice and alcohol flavours, even distribution of good-quality fruit ingredients and how well the pudding held its shape after cutting.

They scored the puddings based on the Choice Expert Rating, made up of 90% sensory attributes (appearance/quality of finish 30%, flavour and aroma 25%, mixture quality 25%, moistness/texture 20% and 10% nutrition (determined solely by the Health Star Rating).

Choice recommends products with a Choice Expert Rating of 70% or more.

Do you have a favourite brand of Christmas pudding? Let us know in the comments below!

  • I always get the one in the red tub from Coles. My family are happy with that and we serve it with custard and cream. Its only one of the many desserts we have. The rest are homemade especially the pavlovo and trifle which my partner has requested this year as he loves it

  • My mother-in-law would top the list with hers!

  • I was really hoping that this article had a recipe for a plum pudding. I used my usual recipe to make my own this year, but I think next year I may try the Royal Family one.

  • I’ve never eaten Christmas pudding .. always had chocolate pudding instead! I was gifted a Woolworths gold Christmas pudding recently so will be interesting to hear what the family have to say about it!

  • Well at $12 I’ll be trying the Coles one this year #1> I always say I’m going to make one but never get around to it……one day.

  • I prefer to make them myself

    • I make mine too but do like to buy different varieties to challenge the taste buds. There are so many varieties available at the moment. The shelf life is generous and we can enjoy pudding throughout the year.

  • I haven’t tried the coles one but I may have to this year

  • My own homemade Christmas pudding is my favourite, followed by ones from Coles.

  • The only one I ever brought was Big Sisters Plum Pudding in a tin and it hasn’t been around for years and I still miss it. Being diabetic now, most of those on the list are a no-no for me and I haven’t had a Christmas pudding for that long I can’t remember. Might get a single serve one tho just to say I’ve had some……

    Reply

  • I havent even heard of some of these, though love the single serve options, as I’m used to over indulging in mums homemade pud!

    Reply

  • Can’t say I’m a fan of Christmas pudding but nice to see Coles and woolies made it in there amongst all of the other quite exxy ones!!!

  • Happy to put my hand up and be a taste tester for next year! Love Christmas pudding. I love the single serve Woolies ones, doused in custard. Yum!
