Is it safe to use a second-hand cot mattress?

Current advice from Red Nose says that “There is no evidence to show that there is an increased risk of SIDS for babies who sleep on a second-hand mattress” as long as babies sleep on their backs on a flat, firm, clean, well-fitting mattress that is in good condition with no bedding covering the face or head and no exposure to tobacco toxins before or after birth.

How long does a cot mattress last?

For anyone who might be purchasing a second hand cot please if possible buy a brand new mattress to fit it. Second hand mattresses are not a very good idea for anyone but especially not of a young baby.
There are so many out there to choose from and all diffeerent price points

These are all so beautiful. I love Mocka, I find their furniture to be fantastic quality and made with care. My daughter had a Mocka bed and draws and they have both lasted. High quality and very durable furniture. I think it’s very important to ensure your child can’t fall out of their cot or climb through it.

Wow!, It’s hard to imagine how many varieties are needed. So many options out there that I just find it confusing. I now they are safer or cleaner or firmer but it’s just too much to take in. I think I’d have a very hard time selecting the right one.

This is a great article worth reading if you are looking for a cot. I had no idea what I was doing when I bought one for my daughter. I even realised that all cots are different sizes and have different features. I ended up with a simple one that was second hand and I bought a new mattress for it.

I can’t remember which brand of cot mattress we used but we did buy it a speciallity shop. We had a convertable cot which transferred into a toddler bed at later age. The mattress had a baby side which was water resistant and a toddler side which looked like a memory foam type of mattress
